    M.Tech. NDT Semester – I, 2020


    Dept. of Physics, NIT Tiruchirappalli.

    Maximum Marks : 20

    Answer all questions.

    Q1. Distinguish between diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials


    with one example of each. (3)

    Q2. Describe ferromagnetic hysteresis curve with diagram. Hence show that AC
    but not DC is used for demagnetization of a ferromagnetic material. (4)

    Q3.

    (i) Write down Maxwell’s equations in free space and in a medium with
    conductivity σ, permeability µ and permittivity ε. (3)
    (ii) Hence derive the formula for skin depth in the medium of
    electromagnetic wave of angular frequency ω . (4)
    (iii) Show also that the eddy current density is perpendicular to the magnetic
    field and the amplitude of the eddy current density is directly
    proportional to the angular frequency and the amplitude of the oscillating
    magnetic field. (2)

    Q4. What is the theoretical principle of ECT of cracks? (4)
