Supplementary Learning Kit
Week 1
This supplementary learning kit (SLK) in Music 9 is for the first day of
the first quarter. The contents of the SLK is a manual that aims to assist
learning, reading materials that includes today’s lessons, and activity sheets
for assessment and development of the learner. It also includes a reflective
diary that should be answered both by the learner and the facilitator which
serves as a continuous record of their learnings, problems encountered, and
solutions provided for each lesson.
The facilitator may be a parent, sibling, relative, or anyone who may provide
guidance to our learners. They may guide and ask questions to ensure learning and
understanding of the topic. The facilitator also ensures that all questions are
answered by the learner as well as all task necessary for the whole week.
Hello! Are you ready to learn something new? This is the first supplementary
learning kit for Music 9 . This SLK will be your guide to study the elements of music
and its use on Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Music. Prepare yourself for a
journey that includes different time periods and locations as we witness the different
kinds of western art traditions through the ages. Open your eyes as we dive deep
into the world of Art. Ensure that you answer all questions and accomplish all the
activities included. Remember, “You are braver than you believe, and stronger
than you seem and smarter than you think”.

LESSON 1: Musical Elements of
Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque
Music
Medieval Period
The Medieval period was also known as Middle Ages or “Dark Ages”
which started with the fall of the Roman Empire. During this era, the
Christian Church was greatly influenced by Europe’s culture and political
affairs.
A monophonic plainchant known as Gregorian Chant was named
after Pope Gregory I, who made this an approved music of the Catholic
Church. Pope Gregory’s action made these monophonic plainchants
popular during the period
Renaissance Period
The term Renaissance came from the word renaitre which means
“rebirth”, “revival”, and “rediscovery”.

Tempo The Gregorian Chant Deum Verum had variations in tempo all
throughout the song due to its characteristic of Free-Rhythm. This
is evident on the sudden increase and decrease of speed in the
performance.
Melody Due to its use of the Latin language and its thick and heavy timbre
created by the unique European physique, the Melody of Deum
Verum appears mystical, somber, and enchanting. The use of
Melismas and melodic scales also plays a part in its unique
Meter Due to its free-form style wherein most notes that are sung are
either extended or shortened depending on the desire effect by the
conductor, the song has inconsistent meter all throughout the
song.
Timbre Since there is only one Melody for Deum Verum, It is definitely
Monophonic.
Harmony Harmony in Deum verum is basic, considering there is only one
melodic line all throughout the song a s well as its lack of
accompaniment.
Dynamics various effects were created through the use of crescendo, or
increasing volume in Deum Verum to create a majestic effect/,
