Henri Matisse was a French artist known for his use of color. My conclusion regarding
his thoughts about colors is that colors play a very important role in conveying what we want to
express through our artworks and how composition and harmonious integration of different
elements such as figures, empty spaces, proportions play their share in conveying the message or
the feeling that the artists wants to communicate.
Matisse used basic shapes and focused on emphasizing the use of color and how he bases
his choice of color on his observation, sensitivity and felt experience. He may put different tones
without a preconceived plan and adjust eventually and transform others based on what tone
caught him. This allows him to render his sensation and achieve the composition he strives for.
Composition is the art of arranging in a decorative manner the diverse elements to
express the artists’ feelings. For Matisse, a work of art should be harmonious in its entirety as
every part of the picture will be visible and each has their appointed role. Everything that is not
useful in the picture may be harmful. Even the size of sheet of paper matters as the same
expression or feeling may not be conveyed to another sheet of different proportions when it is
drawn again.
Art can be expressed differently but like Matisse, I strive to create an art that is pure and
serene and has calming influence on others.
