Thomas Gainsborough painted "The Blue Boy" depicting a young boy dressed in blue clothing. The blue color and styling of the boy's clothes indicate he was from a middle to upper class social standing. While the boy appears confident in his posture and facial expression, Gainsborough's intention with this portrait was to contrast the formality of museum paintings by using fresh paint and cooler color tones like blues, greens, and celestials.

Thomas Gainsborough (14 May 1727-2 August 1788)
was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman and printmaker he is considered one of the most important British artist of the second half of the 18th century. The first thing that i notice watching this painting, is the blue color of the clothe that the boy wear. i think that maybe he could be ten years old, because he looks very young. He’s clothe also tell me about his social class that can be middle-high. The expression of his face is confident also for the position of his body. The message that Gainsborough want to transmit in his portrait is the actuality intends to contrast a museum painting. He normally work on fresh paint he’s favorite colors were blues, celestials and greens, all cold colors that tend to contrast the warm ones.
