Sunanda Pushkar case

1. Sunanda Pushkar was the wife of former Indian diplomat and Congress party leader
Shashi Tharoor.
She was found dead in her suite no. 345 at Delhi’s Leela Hotel on January 17, 2014.
On jan 16 , 2014 she had a fight with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar on twitter , whom she
thought was having affair with Shashi . Mehr was accused of spying on Shashi being an ISI
agent. Mehr refused the allegation and soon the tweet was deleted from the account

2. later that day on jan 17, 2014 she was found dead in room no .345 . Tharoor was the first
one to found out her body when she did not wake up in the morning from her sleep . He
informed Delhi police and they took the body for the post mortem

3 . Initially the body was taken to AIIMS and the report reveal the unnatural death of
Sunanda and the marks on her body may or may not be the reason for her death . The
autopsy indicated that there are sign on her body for administration of illicit drug overdose, a
combination of sedatives and other medicine and probably alcohol.

4.. the case got even more dirtier when Sudhir gupta (head of forensic dept in AIIMS)
confessed that he was being pressurized to manipulate the report . He received various
mails and phone calls to direct the report as normal haemorrhage that causes the death and
would seems as a natural death instead of unnatural one .

He also confessed that he got various calls from the ex director of AIIMS to manipulate the
report. Pushkar had fifteen injury marks on her body, most of which did not contribute to
death. But, there were two other marks — an injection mark and some bite marks - which
aroused suspicion. The report also said that there was a presence of excess amount of
alprazolam drug in her stomach.

5 . as of now the case is still mysterious and the hearing are going on. The court is trying to
find the state of mind of Sunanda before the time of death . For this , they are referring the
tweets she wrote in public domain. The tweets clearly indicate that Pushkar was not having
any suicidal ideation. The police had told the court that Pushkar was suffering from mental
stress due to a strained relationship with her husband.

She used to have lots of fights with her husband and had various injury marks a few days
before her death and that Tharoor used to torture her .

6 the court has sought a direction to the police to take steps to preserve the social
media account and tweets by asking 'Twitter India' to preserve Pushkar's account till
the pendency of the proceedings before the trial court. The plea referred to Twitter's
policies as per which it can delete the accounts of users who have been inactive for
a prolonged period of time.
Further, in certain cases, if some authorised person or close relative of a deceased
person contacts Twitter, the account of such deceased person can be deactivated. In
such cases of deletion of account or deactivation of account, the tweets and contents
of the twitter timeline are lost forever
