Work Instructions
Fabric Pilling Resistance by Pilling Tester

1. Preparation of the specimens

i) Identify the warp and weft direction of the fabric sample.

ii) In case of plain fabric, select the specimens randomly from the available
fabric.
iii) For patterned fabric, include all types of patterns.
iv) Mark four specimens with the help of template (114 mm x 114 mm).
v) Mark warp and weft identification on each specimen.
vi) Cut the specimens with the help of pair of scissor.
vii) Leave the specimens flat, singly, pile surface uppermost for moisture
equilibrium in the standard atmospheric condition.
viii) For making two warp-wise samples, wrap the specimens in such a way
that warp yarns are parallel to the length of the tube and face is on the
outside of the tube.
ix) For making two weft-wise samples, wrap the specimens in such a way that
weft yarns are parallel to the length of the tube and face is on the outside
of the tube.
x) Fold the specimen face inwards and make in to tubes by sewing on a line
that is 6 mm from the edge.

2. Operation

i) Open the lid of the Pilling Tester.

ii) Ensure that the pilling box is clean and free from loose fibrous residue.
iii) Place the four samples in the pilling box.
iv) Close the lid and secure it firmly.
v) Pre set the counter for the number of revolutions required, as
indicated below:
All other knitted fabrics 4 hours (14400 revs)
Woven fabric 10 hours (36000 revs)
Woven fabric 05 hours (18000 revs)

vi) After tumbling for the appropriate period, take the tubes from the box
and remove the specimens from the tubes by removing the seam.
vii) View the specimens at an angle of 90 degree.
viii) Grade each specimen by comparing the degree of pilling on the specimen
with the photographic standards.
ix) Ensure that both the sample and photograph are viewed in the same
plane and orientation.
