Berserk by Kentaro Miura: Film review

Berserk is a series of film made to adapt the original manga written and illustrated by Kentaro
Miura. The aesthetic is mostly based from medieval period and the center of the story (Guts) an
edgy mercenary who has existential issue joined a mercenary group (Band of the falcon). There
are a lot of theme in berserk there are war, peace, trauma, sadness, loneliness, friendship, hope,
despair, agony, irony, love, hate, religion and betrayal and much, much more. The supporting
characters are great because they’re easy to relate and Miura use them as a plot device to make
the protagonist progress and made the story more impactful.
Berserk first released its first chapter in October 22, 2003 and got a film adaptation in 2012.
Berserk is a self-driven story the Protagonist is one of the most complex character I have known
he can sometimes be portrayed as a monster more terrifying than his enemy and can easily be
mistakenly seen as a antagonist or he can be a delicate human being with full of negative
emotion and trauma his back story only made him more relatable when he was young he was
sold by his father by a few silver coin to be raped by a fat ugly guy, and later on he accidentally
killed his father. At a young age he learns to sleep alone in a Dark and Dangerous places fighting
wolves at night and people in the day. He was later been invited by charismatic man with full of
dreams and ambition and later on they became friends. As an audience I never expect this man to
be the antagonist (Griffith) before the eclipse he was seen as the hero he was portrayed as the
hero of the story he will do anything just to achieve his dream he was even willing to sold his
body to an old man just to get to get enough money to finance his mercenary group but this
character was a complex man that even to this day I can’t fathom this true motive and emotion.
Guts and Griffith are two sides of a coin, yin & yang and the dark and the light. Guts at this
point is still questioning his existence he doesn’t doesn’t have dreams or ambition he later
accidentally heard Griffith if he doesn’t consider anyone without a dream his friend or equal.
Guts finally found purpose even though he finds a comfortable home in a shape of the band of
the falcon (the mercenary group) even though it hurt him to leave his home he still leaves his
home just to be in the equal footing with Griffith. The antagonist was not happy about his
decision he has feeling to guts and got depress he later have intercourse with the princess and the
king find out about this and order his subject to wipe out his mercenary group. Griffith was
torture skin alive and got his tongue cut he was later rescue when guts return to the surviving
mercenary group and the girl he love(casca) is leading them after they rescue a dying Griffith
they party began to celebrate but not for Griffith for he saw the person he like with another girl.
Griffith decided to sacrifice everyone who rescue them and rape casca and guts was outrage with
this and decided on a revenge journey.
Guts has an existential problem he struggles to connect with other people to the point that he
doesn’t want to be touch he was change little by little by meeting the band of the falcon and
found the girl she like from an edgy monster killing guy to father figure guy. While Griffith
ascend to a higher being through metamorphosis and go on his journey to build an
empire/kingdom he still devalue everyone and would not care even if they die. Guts character
development is like no other comparable to none there are vast array of emotion inside guts that
show how human he is while Griffith show no empathy whatsoever, he is has this philosophy A
Means to an end. These characters are complex and deep I hope I can express more but I exceed
1 page already.
