Definition of Personality
Personality
● Comes from the Latin word “persona” which referred to theatrical mask worn by Roman actors
in Greek dramas to portray.
● The sum total of the qualities and characteristics of a person as shown in their manner of
walking, talking, dressing and their attitudes, interests and ways of reacting to other people.
● Refers to all the factors within the person that influence their characteristics ways of behaving,
thinking and feeling.
● Your image on others and others image on you.
COMPONENTS OF PERSONALITY
A. Physical – this includes the mode of dressing, manner of walking, posture, body build, health,
complexion, and facial expression.
B. Intellectual – how a person talks, and what they talks about is what matters in the intellectual
component of personality. They must develop their intellectual or “brain”.
C. Social – good manners, correct manners are included in this aspects of personality. To do the
right thing at the right time, to act in the proper manner, to get along with others – these are all
parts of social sphere or personality.
D. Emotional – this components includes a person’s likes and dislikes, whether they’re outgoing or
shy, calm or nervous, or whether they losses their temper easily “or keeps them cool.”
Personality problems, such as how to stay mentally healthy or how to avoid mental disorders are
some problems that are emotionally in nature.
E. Value System – this includes a person’s attitudes, values, beliefs, and philosophy in life. This
aspect is referred to as character. It is shown in the way we judge whether our actions and actions
of others are right or wrong.
5. NEOROTICISM
(Sensitive/Nervous vs. Secure/Confident)
-refers to emotional stability, control over emotions and impulses, a tendency for anger,
nervousness, despair, or susceptibility.

✔ GOOD COMMUNICATION
Communicate is an important key factor in building a customer base for the business in the
hospitality industry. This is done by undergoing training on how to communicate better. The
training programs involves conducting group discussions, development programs on
interpersonal skills, organizing various seminars and presentations. All these programs
enable the employees to learn how to speak better or how to improve their posture when
talking with customers.
✔ COMPASSION
Employees in the hospitality industry must be people who are humane about the difficulties
others face. They should be supple hearted and amenable to provide solutions to the
problems their clients come up without complaining or murmuring. This trait would enable
them to be always willing to help their customers by putting up a bright smile on their face.
This also gives the customer a sense of residing and acknowledgement. It makes in building a
network of repeat customers.
✔ KNOWLEDGE
It is important for the employees to read more about their industry to permit them to evolve
the requisite skills that would help them. There is no one that knows it all so in order to
become better rigged and skilled in their job, the hospitality industry provide them with the
relevant material and books that relate to the industry.
✔ GOOD DRESSING AND INNER BEAUTY
Dressing plays a major role in building up ones’ personality, and so it does in the hospitality
industry. The hospitality industry teaches the employees to always dress in neat and smart
way as this gives the business a good impression in the minds of the customer. Employees
who are attractive in appearance and dressing also exude confidence as they relate with those
that patronize them. This trait of confidence is also good for the business because when they
are confident about themselves, they’ll confidently deal with their customers as well.
Personality Development
● Doesn’t only involve your inner self but also your outward appearance i.e. physique.
Learning to think positively, be confident, develop a healthy body, having etiquette are some
of the things people do to improve their personality.

● Professional development - refers to all training, certification and education that a worker needs
to succeed in his or her career. It's no secret that different jobs require different skills. Even if a
worker currently has the necessary skills, he or she may need additional skills in the future.
Through professional development, workers can learn these skills to become better, more
efficient workers.
● While job training is an essential part of professional development, this concept covers all forms
of education and learning that's intended to help a worker succeed. Other examples of
professional development include college studies, online training programs, industry
certifications, coaching, mentoring and consultation.
Benefits of Professional Development for Employers
● Employers can benefit from professional development in several ways. First, it promotes higher
employee retention rates. But employers who offer professional development will encourage
employees to stay with their business.
● Professional development also signals competency on behalf of the employer. Some industries
actually require workers to hold certifications.
● Professional development, however, can help workers obtain the necessary certification and
learning for their industry.
Example:
a. If you're applying for a job as a restaurant manager, for example, you may be required to have
two or more years of managerial experience in a restaurant or similar hospitality business.
b. If you're applying for a job as a travel company sales representative, the position may require
sales experience.
● Regardless of which type of hospitality job you are applying for, earning a hospitality
diploma can significantly increase your chances of getting hired for the position. When given
the option of hiring a candidate with a diploma or a candidate without a diploma, an
employer will most likely choose the former
● It's also worth noting that hospitality professionals with a diploma are typically compensated
well than their counterparts without a diploma. Therefore, anyone who's considering a
position as a hospitality professional should consider earning a hospitality diploma.

A. In the food and beverage industry, managers need to be more hands-on and interact with their
customers in order to get feedback of the services offered.
