Lecture Guide

Selective Presentation and Impression Management

Self-presentation
The processes individuals use to control the impressions of others social
interaction.

Types of Self-presentation

Authentic
The goal is to create an image consistent with the way we view ourselves.

Ideal
Offline Activities The goal is to establish an image consistent with what we wish we were.
(e-Learning/Self-
Tactical self-presentation
Paced) The goal is to establish a public image consistent with what others want or
expect us to be.

In tactical self-presentation, a person cares only about the impact of the image
they present to others, not about whether that image is consistent with their real
or ideal self.

Needed Extended Self due to Sharing

Self-revelation
There is a sense of being anonymous, or at least one step removed on electronic
media. We post statuses, comments and “tweets” and it feels very much like
talking in an empty room – that the likelihood of anyone hearing what we’re
saying, or that if they did hear, that they’d pay attention or especially that we’d
reveal something we didn’t intend to, is slim.

Loss of Control
Ultimately, the screen gives us permission to be rude and uncivil and to express
only part of ourselves. With 24/7 access to people’s voices and opinions what
we often see is their darker selves because people lose sight of their conscience
when nobody is watching. People can post an opinion without discussion or a
picture without context any time of the day and consume the same from others.

In this environment of fear, what I don’t hear are discussions about how we can
take responsibility for controlling technology and our interaction with it. We are
not victims unless we make ourselves so. Technology is not happening to us.
Without us, it is nothing. And has no power.

Shared Digital Possessions and Aggregate Self

Teenagers are quite at ease with photos and media becoming digital, online
entities rather than physical objects. Turning on our computers, magic appear
before us and with a click of the mouse we enter an environment we have come
to call cyberspace.

Conceptually, we envision a virtual or non-physical space existing somewhere

between here and there that we enter through computer-based technology. We
speak through emails, or by talking in a chat room or by participating in an online
wedding “as if” we experience a similar presence. But where are we and where
are those with whom we speak? If we are nor there and they are not here, where
do these conversations take place?

The online disinhibition describes the loosening of social restrictions and

inhibitions that are normally present in face-to-face interaction that takes place
in interactions on the Internet.

According to Hicks (2010) it is a mask that we put on to engage the technological

world.
Twenty-nine years ago, when Belk (1988) presented the concept of the extended
self, there were already personal computers.

Attachment and Singularization

The emergence of dematerialized and nonmaterial possessions raises the
question of whether consumers can become as attached to immaterial
possessions as they can to material possessions (which include digital devices)
and whether we can gain status and an enhanced sense of self from virtual
possessions.

Gender and Sexuality Online

Media has defined how females and males should look and act. Through
advertisements, performers, actors, the standard male should be masculine,

dominant, physically fit, has abs, handsome and so on. The standard women is
feminine, soft, pretty, treated as property, objectified, should be submissive, thin,
have large breasts and so on.

Performing Gender Online

We all know that social media plays a huge part in our day to day life and the
world as we known it. Not only do men and women tend to be drawn to different
forms of social media, but studies show they also seem to post very different
content.

In terms of the various forms of social media, more visual forms platforms like
Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram tend to draw more female users. In addition,
men usually prefer more text oriented forms of social media like Reddit or Digg.

Setting Boundaries to your Online Self: Smart Sharing

Good boundaries are important for healthy relationships, but when it comes to
our online lives, we rarely think to create clear-cut borders. The most important
reason to set boundaries online is for your safety and protection. Personally, you
don’t want to give out private information to the world and professionally, you
don’t want to compromise your credibility and reputation.

Give yourself permission.

Many people think that they don’t deserve to set boundaries in the first place
and think we should automatically accept anyone who wants to befriend us
online.

Consider your purpose.

Ask yourself. What purpose do social media serve for me? Are you using
Facebook to keep in touch with friends, to network professionally or both?

Set boundaries surrounding time.

The internet is like a moving target and with that comes the expectation that we
need to respond to people’s comments right away, return email within a day or
even hours and stay plugged in so we’re continuously in the know. But
remember that you do have a choice and there is no requirement.

Interact with others.

Interacting online can get tricky.

Take things slow.

When you’re chatting away on your computer in the comfort of home,
particularly with like-minded people it feels like you know them intimately. But
take your time. It takes about six to nine months to get to know someone’s
character.

Ask for clarification.

Without verbal cues, it’s easy to misinterpret a person’s message online.

Be honest about your feelings.

If the person’s comment is loud and clear and you’re upset by it, move the
conversation over to email or the phone. If they say something hurtful or
inappropriate, let them know how you felt about it. Sometimes people just don’t
realize that they are crossing boundaries.

Practice the three-strikes-you’re-out rule.

Give a person a chance to set things right. If you’ve asked the person three times
to refrain from making certain comments, it is time to take some type of action
that limits their contact with you.

Give them the benefit of the doubt.

Keep in mind that everyone has different comfort levels. With so many different
personalities, temperaments and cultural backgrounds, what offends one person
may never give another one a pause. But there’s a gray area, if it is the first time
someone offended you, give them the benefit of a doubt and avoid jumping to
conclusions.

Honor your feelings and comfort level.

At the end of the day, boundaries are about how something made you feel so pay
attention to your own emotions and comfort level.

Be thoughtful in your own responses.

Remember that your offline life is not the only one that requires boundaries.
Creating margins around your comfort level is equally as essential for your time
online.

Six Causes of Online Disinhibition

Dissociative Anonymity (People Don’t Know Me)

This is the confidence you feel every time you anonymously engage in online
activities.
Arguing online in the comments sections, for example, emboldens you to use
profanities and even hate slurs because none of them really knows you
personally.

Invisibility (People Can’t See Me)

In hiding your true physical and personal attributes away, you are effectively
freeing yourself up from the baggage of having to present yourself as you truly
are. Invisibility enables you to alter your visual avatar’s personality.

Asynchronicity (See You When I see You)

Every time you send an email or even message on Facebook, time is on your side.
You can compose, structure and edit it in a span of several minutes, an hour or
even more. You have the luxury of time delay in the virtual world.

Solipsistic Introjection (It’s all in the Mind)

This is why acquaintances are sometimes very talkative to each other virtually
but do not actually speak let alone interact much in real life. You play casting
director for these voices, imagining how the pitch or intonation would be if
spoken out loud.

Dissociate Imagination (It is All a Play)

Bouyed by the assumption that your real-life identity and digital avatars are
separate entities and that the cyberspace is but an outlet space (like movies),
you sometimes resort to doing unspeakable things you normally wouldn’t do in
real life.

Minimization of Status and Authority (Your Rules Don’t Work Online)

Authority figures express their authority through dress, body language, name
titles, and their environments. Without these cues, their authority is reduced in
online environments. Online, people are perceived to be equals.

In a more visual Internet environment of social media, virtual worlds, online

games, blogs, web pages, photo- and video-sharing sites, Internet dating sites,
and so forth, we are disembodied and re-embodied as avatars, photos, and
videos.

The resulting disinhibition leads many to conclude that they are able to express
their “true self” better online than they ever could in face-to-face context.

Are you a Good Web Citizen?

Just like the real world etiquette we follow – like holding the door for the person
behind you or covering your mouth when you sneeze – the World Wide Web has
its own etiquette or “netiquette.”

Don’t be a cyber-bully.
It is easy to feel safe behind the screen of our computer. That is because the
Internet allows you to conceal your identity. Along with the sense of anonymity
comes the feeling of power, something that can be taken advantage of and used
for purposes that you wouldn’t think of doing in real life. Treat your cyber
friends the way you would want to be treated in real life.

Think first, act second.

Be careful about what you post to avoid future embarrassment; don’t share
anything on websites that you wouldn’t want your employers, family members
or strangers to see.

Protect yourself and those around you.

Stay up to date with privacy settings in social media. If you know someone you
know does not want something posted on a website, know that you do have the
ability to report objectionable material on most social media outlets.

Don’t steal information.

If you stumble upon someone else’s information or work that is copyrighted, do
not use it for your own benefit. Cite all the sources when referencing information
that is not yours to avoid plagiarism and legal issues.

Share your knowledge.

The way to make a change is to get everyone involved. Share and teach those
around you about your importance of being a good cyber citizen.
