Q.1: When did you born and tell us something about your birthplace?

Ans. I was born in Allahabad , Uttar Pradesh, on 29 August 1905.

Q.2: What did your father do, and your family?


Ans: I have two Brothers- Mool Singh & Roop Singh. And My father , Mr. Sameshwar Singh was
enlisted in the British Indian Army.

Q.3: how about your schooling and further education?


Ans: Because of my father's numerous army transfers, the family had to move to different cities, and I
could not continue my education after six years of schooling. Later I was graduated from Victoria
College, Gwalior in 1932.

Q.4: Is Dhyan chand your original name or Dhyan singh?


Ans: though my original name was Dhyan Singh, but Since I used to practice a lot during the night after
my duty hours, I used to wait for the moon to come out so that the visibility in the field improved
(during his era there were no street / ground lights). And that is how I was called "Chand", by my
fellow players.

Q.5 what made you think join the Army?


Ans: Actually, My father was behind this idea. On 29 August 1922 - my 17th birthday – I was
appointed as a Sepoy in the British Indian Army.

Q.6: when did you start playing Hockey and when?


Ans: When I was Young, I had no serious inclination towards sports though I loved wrestling. I do not
remember whether I played any hockey before I joined the Army. I exclusively played army hockey
tournaments and regimental games only before.

Q.7: So, what made you think to play for your country for Olympics?
Ans: I got selected from Army from different teams for selections in Olympics, the selectors liked my
game, and sent me with Indian Hockey team for 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics.

Q.8 why people called you The Wizard, The magician? What magic did you spread on the
world?
Ans: I remember, The Indian team's better players Feroze Khan, Ali Shaukat and Kher Singh were on
the sick list and I was ill too. Still we all performed so well, and defeated the hosts by 3–0, and the
Indian team won its country's first Olympic gold medal.
I was the top scorer of the tournament, with 14 goals in 5 matches. And one of the newspaper
reported about India's triumph said --
This is not a game of hockey, but magic. Dhyan Chand is in fact the magician of hockey.
Q.9: It is heard that the German Leader Adolf Hitler was so impressed with your skills that he
offered you German citizenship and a position of Colonel in the German Army, which you
refused, may I ask you why did you refuse such an honor?
Ans: Yes! I received a message from Adolf Hitler to join his army, but I politely refused his offer, citing
inconvenience in relocating to Germany with my family. I remember, I concluded our meeting in the
private box of the stadium saying” India is not for sale”.

Q.10: you were awarded with Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honor. How do
you feel about it?
Ans: on 29 August 1956, after 34 years of service I was awarded with this honor, and I feel immense
proud and loved by the country. I am Thankful to all my countrymen and God for it.
