SCIENCE ACTIVITY SHEET VI_10.

1
Activity-1: ___________________________________________________________

Materials Provided: A tape measure or ruler

Here is what you do:

➢ Work in a small group and use your hand span as a unit to
measure the length of a table.
➢ Record the observations in the table.
➢ Now measure the length of the same table using a scale and
record your observations in the next column.
Observations:

Who measured the width of the table? No. of hand spans Length using a scale

Conclusion:

Activity-2: _____________________________________________________

Materials Provided: A tape or ruler & a thread

Here is what you do:

➢ Use a thread to measure the length of the curved

line AB.
➢ Put a knot on the thread near one of its ends. Place this knot on the point A.
➢ Now, place a small portion of the thread along the line, keeping it taut using your fingers
and thumb. Hold the thread at this end point with one hand. Using the other hand, stretch a
little more portion of the thread along the curved line.
➢ Go on repeating this process till the other end B of the curved line is reached.
➢ Make a mark on the thread where it touches the end B.
➢ Now stretch the thread along a metre scale. Measure the length between the knot in the
beginning and the final mark on the thread. This gives the length of the curved line AB.

Activity-3: ___________________________________________________.
Materials Provided:
• A tree/structure to measure
• Measuring Tape
• Notebook
• A friend/ Adult

Here is what you do:

This experiment is best done on a sunny day.

➢ With your back to the sun, have your friend measure your shadow-from the tips of your toes
to the top of your head along the ground. Jot down the measurement.
➢ Now measure the length of the shadow that is cast by the tree – from foot of the structure to
the end of its shadow. Make a note of the measurement.
➢ Next stand against a wall and ask your friend to measure your height. Jot down the
measurement.
➢ Now you have three measurements in place. The fourth one in proportion will be the actual
height of the tree.
Observations:
Length of your shadow =
Length of the shadow of the tree =
