A Three Phase Full Wave Controlled Rectifier
With Different Loads

The Object of the Experiment

To know the properties and the characteristics of a three phase full wave
controlled rectifier with resistive load and highly inductive load using (Matlab/
Simulink).

The firing angle of Th2 is α , The firing angle of Th2 is (α + 60˚).

The firing angle of Th3 is (α+120˚) , The firing angle of Th4 is (α+180˚).

The firing angle of Th5 is (α+240˚) , The firing angle of Th6 is (α+300˚).

A- The Load is Pure Resistive

Th1 Th3 Th5

Th4 Th6 Th2

1- Continuous Mode (0˚ ≤ α ≤ 30˚)

The conduction angle of Th1 is 60˚ or (2π/3)

3√3V
V = cos α
π

2- Discontinuous Mode (30˚ ≤ α ≤ 150˚)

The conduction angle of Th1 is from (α to π)

3V
V = [1 + cos α + 30 ]

B- The Load is Highly Inductive
The conduction angle of Th1 is 60˚ or (2π/3)

3√3V
V = cos α
π

The Procedures

1- Connect the circuit of the three phase full wave controlled rectifier with
resistive load (R=10 Ω) using (Matlab/ Simulink).
2- Set the input supply voltage (380 Volt and 50 Hz).
3- Read and displays the waveforms of the input voltage, load current and
load voltage at trigger angle (α = 30˚).
4- Change the value of (α) from (0˚ to 150˚) as shown in the table below, then
record the corresponding values of Vdc.
α (deg) 0˚ 30˚ 60˚ 90˚ 120˚ 150˚

Vdc (V)

5- Change the load into (R= 10 Ω and L=2 H) and then repeat the steps (2, 3
and 4) above.

The Report:-
1. For a three phase full wave controlled rectifier with resistive load Determine
the mean value of the output voltage mathematically at firing angle (α) of (0˚
,60˚ and 120˚) and compare it with the simulink results.
2. Draw to scale the mean value of the output voltage at (α) of (30˚ and 90˚)
3. Depending on your results draw the relation between (Vdc) Against (α).
4. For same circuit, if the load is highly inductive (or smooth current), repeat
the above steps (1, 2 and 3).
5. Comment on your results.
