You will be working with your lab partners for this exercise.

Introduction
In this lab, you will learn how to complete the installation of a storage system by
setting up and configuring the storage system software and service processor
software.
To put the storage system to a known state, you will start de-installing the 3PAR
Storage System first.
After this, all data on the volumes are no longer accessible and whole configuration of
the 3PAR Storage System is deleted. This process is also called “Back in the Box”
process.
Before starting the setup task, make sure that the all hardware components are
correctly installed and powered on.

From the following list, obtain the addresses and names of the systems assigned to
your group before proceeding with the setup and configuration procedures.

Exercise 1: De-installation of a 3PAR Storage System

Connect the Maintenance PC to a Controller Node

The Console ports are already connected to the maintenance server in the virtual lab
environment. You can easily use PuTTY to connect to these ports.
In a customer environment use the provided cable and connectors to connect the
Maintenance PC to the console port.
Use the HP 3PAR StoreServ 10000 Storage Installation and Deinstallation Guide to
answer the following question.
1. What is the Console port Baud-rate?

_____________________________________________________________
2. What is the part number of the DB9 female to RJ45 serial adapter assembly
used to connect the console port?

_____________________________________________________________

De-installing a HP 3PAR Storage Server

To de-install a HP 3PAR Storage System, connect to the console port of a storage
node. The serial port is only used for specific management function not available via
the Service Processor or the CLI or Management Console. One of the specific
functions is the installation and de-installing of the storage system.
Take care when selecting options while in 3PAR Console Menu. Some options are
customer data destructive and not reversible. Never execute a command or menu
option without fully understanding the result.

1. Join the break out room of your group (video and audio) and discuss in your
group.
2. Decide how is going to drive the session and share his desktop.
3. From the Windows desktop start PuTTY.

4. Start the Saved Session StoreServ 10400-Node 0 to connect to the console

The storage system initialization script called oobt (out of the box) procedure can only
be started on an uninitialized system.
To prepare the system (delete user date and storage configuration information) the
option” 6 Set up the system to wipe and rerun ootb ” have to be started. This is also
the standard procedure to prepare a 3PAR storage system to rerun ootb.
In this lab a deinstalation will be performed first, were you have the option to delete
and overwrite all chunklets. This can take hours or up to days depend on the raw disk
capacity. To perform a deinstallation you have to select option 8 twice and you have to
reset all nodes manually.

Note:
The Deinstallation has to be perform on HP 3PAR StoreServ 7000
Storage Systems to used 3PAR SmartStart a second time. Option “6
Set up the system to wipe and rerun ootb “ is not sufficient.

8. Open a new PuTTY session for the other Node (Node 1) to monitor the output
of the serial port of the other node.

Notice how you can identify which node you are connected to.
9. Select option 8. Perform a deinstallation . on Node 0.
10. Review the warning message and enter y to proceed with the deinstallation

Exercise 2: Setting up the Service Processor using the Moment-

of-Birth (MOB) script.
The Service Processor (SP) enables the service provider to locally and remotely
monitor and service the storage system.
To rebuild the Service Processor, the following steps are required:
 Installation of the Base OS and the Service Processor Software.
 Starting the Moment Of Birth process
 Installing 3PAR InForm OS files
 Adding an InServ Storage Server to the Service Processor
A new Service Processor is preinstalled with the Base OS and the SP Software.
During the setup of a new 3PAR Storage System, only the Moment-Of-Birth process
has to be started and the proper version of the 3PAR InForm OS version has to be
installed.
These are the requirement to add the HP 3PAR Storage to the Service Processor.
The whole rebuild of an SP is only required during troubleshooting, SP replacement,
or if the Secure Site setting has to be changed.
If it is required to rebuild the Service Processor, it is best to connected to the Service
Processor via KVM and the serial port.
Power-on the Service Processor with the rebuild DVD installed and follows the
instruction on the video screen or just press ENTER on the keyboard. Monitor the
progress of the rebuild process on the serial line connection. After approximately 30
minutes the login prompt will allow you to login on the serial line connection and to
start the MOB process.
The SP rebuild cannot be done in a remote lab environment because manual
intervention is required.

Rev. 14.11 L -23

HP 3PAR StoreServ 10000 ServiceOne Break-Fix

Installation of the Base OS and the Service Processor Software (Example)

To rebuild the Service Processor Software you need physical access to the Service
Processor.
The next three steps are already done as part of the Virtual Lab setup.
1. Connect to the Service Processor serial interface.
2. Insert the Service Processor base image CD or DVD into the Service Processor
CD-ROM drive, and then reboot the Service Processor.
3. At the boot prompt enter 38400 if a SuperMicro II system gets rebuilded or just
Enter.

If the Service Processor is rebuild the SP will reboot automatically (30 min).
The Service Processor is now ready to run MOB.

Spare Chunklet Management

Physical disks are divided into chunklets. When a physical disk is admitted to the
system, it is divided into chunklets that become available to the system. Some
chunklets are used by logical disks and other chunklets are designated as spares to
hold relocated data during a disk failure or during maintenance procedures.
Creating, moving, and removing chunklets and spares can only be performed with the
HP 3PAR Command Line Interface (CLI).
Viewing chunklets and spares can be performed with both the HP 3PAR InForm
Command Line Interface (CLI) and the HP 3PAR Management Console.
The default for spare space is to ensure 1 Drive worth of space, in terms of spare
Chunklets, (of the largest Drive) for every 40 Drives, with a minimum of 4 Drives worth
of space assigned to sparing.
7. Check the available chunklet by using the showpd –c command.

Lab 6: Replace FRUs using CLI

Objectives
After completing this lab, you should be able to:
 Describe were you can find all the required information to replace FRUs without
using Guided Maintenance Procedures.
 Identify the steps required to replace any FRU using CLI commands.

Introduction
Guided maintenance scripts are provided with the Service Processor to help facilitate
the removal and replacement of Field Replaceable Units (FRUs). The maintenance
scripts execute all Command Line Interface (CLI) commands required to be able to
replace the failed component without compromising the system integrity. This
minimizes user errors when performing maintenance activities.
In case the Guided Maintenance script cannot be used, service commands are
available to support the maintenance task. To minimize user error when performing
maintenance procedures with the service command, see the P10000 Storage System
Maintenance Manual.
Please refer to the HP 3PAR StoreServ 10000 Storage Maintenance Manual.

Caution:
This is a reading exercise. Beside of show commands don’t start any
maintenance activity on the remote lab environment unless directed by
the lab exercise or instructor.
The risk to put the system in an unusable state is very high, if you
don’t have physical access to the system.

Lab 7: Disk and Disk shelf upgrade

Objectives
After completing this lab, you should be able to:
 Identify steps to add disk to an existing 3PAR Storage System
 Identify steps to add disk chassis to an existing 3PAR Storage System
 Rebalance the storage system

Introduction
In order to upgrade a 3PAR Storage System you have to make sure that after the
upgrade you will maintain at least the same availability level as before. To avoid hot
spots always try have a balanced system were the load is equally spread across all
hardware components. To achieve this, you have to follow the configuration guidelines
of 3PAR storage systems.
After an upgrade you have to tune the storage system that also existing volumes
benefit from the new hardware.

Use the HP 3PAR StoreServ Configuration Guide and HP 3PAR/P10000 3PAR

Storage Server Upgrades Guide as reference.

Note:
Due to the fact that you don’t have access to hardware, you have to
use the videos of the HP Services Media Library to see the manual
operation required to install and replace hardware components.

4. Use the HP 3PAR Configuration Guide to verify the minimum supported

increment of drive chassis for your system.
5. Identify the “Installing Additional Drive Chassis” chapter of the upgrade manual
and read through.

6. A cage ID and a cage name get assigned automatically if you add or replace a
cage. Cage Id will never be reused; a new cage or replacement cage will get just
the next higher ID.
So the cage ID cannot be used to identify the location of the cage within the rack.
Configure the position information instead.
7. Assign position information to the cage with the
setcage position <“free format text here” > cage _ command.
8. To get the position information user the showcage –d command.

Note:
The position information you enter is not verified by the system.
Whenever it is required to safely locate a cage within the rack use the
locate feature of the system.

Lab 8: Node Rescue

Objectives

After completing this lab, you should be able to:

 Identify steps to prepare for a Node Rescue
 Perform an Auto Node to Node Rescue

Introduction
Node Rescue is used to restore the internal disk of a node. This can be the case if the
disk in a failed node is questionable and replaced by a blank disk.
In order to use auto-node rescue, the storage system must have at least one
operating node and the node to be rescued must have an active Ethernet connection
to this node.
Auto node rescue requires that an Ethernet cable is connected to the node to be
rescued prior to insertion, along with the currently configured Ethernet connections on
the running nodes.

Note:
Always perform the automatic node to node rescue procedures unless
otherwise instructed.
When performing auto node to node rescue, there may be instances
where a node is to be rescued by another node that has been inserted
but has not been detected. If this happens, issue the CLI command,
startnoderescue –node <nodenum>.

If a Node Rescue operation is running use the showtask -d command to view

detailed status regarding the node rescue.
To manually initiate a Node to Node Rescue you have to halt the node which you like
to rescue first.
