CAPSTONE JOURNAL

The progress I have made during this past week:

Last week my deadlines were:
1. Research Statistics by December 25th, 2020
2. Summarize the statistic and include them in the proposal by December 27th, 2020
a. Researching about why there is a negative perception of academic learning
i. Record statistics
1. Learning styles are not being supported
2. Information is being presented in uninteresting methods
3. Must complete at least three pages in my proposal by December 27th, 2020

I was able to complete all of the goals that I set for myself last week on time. In addition to these
three goals I also did extra research on how to compose a professional proposal. I also put
together a detailed outline of what my final product will include.

Last journal I stated that my meeting with Ms. Ink was very beneficial as it brought many of the
finer details to my attention. After considering Ms. Ink’s comments and researching, I have
adapted my project to better suit the entire student body. I originally planned on only having Mini
School students administer this online tutoring service. However, my ultimate goal for this
project is to enhance education and help students build a healthy relationship with school.
Therefore, putting restrictions on who can volunteer to administer this school wide service would
be unfair and not comply with my goals. Instead, I plan to partner with an existing tutoring
service offered to the John Oliver community and propose my idea to them. I plan on presenting
my proposal to Ms. Eng, the teacher sponsor of the Math and Science Tutor Club near the end
of January.

What I need to move forward with my Capstone (time, space, materials, contacts):
Moving forward I will need to set aside at least 10 hours of my time to research and complete a
majority of my proposal. I will need to continue researching different online platforms, how to
ensure online safety for participants, etc. I will then need to summarize my findings and
professionally add them into my final product. I will also like to read a few professional proposals
online to help me understand what a proper and formal proposal is expected to include.
Time: minimum of 10 hours
Contacts: Ms. Ink and Mr. Edge

Obstacles I have encountered and how I have moved forward:

This week the obstacles that I have encountered were time management and writing my
proposal. Time management was difficult due to last week being the first week of winter break. I
had family events, university applications and extracurriculars that I had to set aside time for.
Therefore, making time for my Capstone project was very difficult. I moved past my obstacle of
time management by making sure that I spent over an hour each day on my Capstone project.
Each morning I wrote down a “To Do List” for myself to help me organize and visualize my tasks
for the day.

In addition to time management, I also found writing my proposal difficult. I have never written a
professional proposal before other than my IDS and Capstone proposal. However, my class
proposals differed from the proposal that I am currently composing because I have to create an
outline myself. I am also having trouble finding the tone and style I want to present my writing in.
I have not moved past this obstacle just yet, but I am reading a few professional proposals to
help me understand what I would like included in my final product.

Obstacles I can foresee in my next steps:

Obstacles that I can foresee in my next steps are related to writing my proposal. I am going to
have difficulties with the following:

1. Proper construction of ideas

2. Effective and thorough expression of my ideas
3. Finding and maintaining a correct writing style
4. Finding and maintaining a correct writing tone

The skills I have used and what I have learned:

The skills that I used this week are problem solving skills. After my meeting with Ms. Ink last
week, I came to realise that there are many changes that I need to make to my original project
plan to ensure that I can meet my ultimate goal of enhancing education and helping students
build a healthy relationship with school. Instead of restricting who can volunteer in this service, I
am going to make it school wide. This is because I want all students to be given the same
opportunity of being tutors regardless if they are a part of the John Oliver Digital Immersion Mini
School program. I am also going to be parenting with an existing tutoring service at our school. I
will be meeting with Ms. Eng, the sponsor of the Math and Science Tutor Club, the first week
back to school after winter break.

The skills that I have learnt are related to writing. Because my final product is a professional
proposal, I have been doing lots of writing and rewriting. I am learning how to efficiently and
effectively express my thoughts. I am also learning more about style, tone and formality. I plan
to continue and learn more skills throughout the course of my project.

My goals and deadlines for the next week:

1. Research and read professional proposals to understand what style and tone the writing
should be presented in by December 29th, 2020.
2. Complete a total of 5 pages of my final product by January 2nd, 2021.
3. Finalize all changes made from my original plan by January 2nd, 2021.
