CAPSTONE JOURNAL

The progress I have made during this past week:

Last week my deadlines were:
1. Research and read professional proposals to understand what style and tone the writing
should be presented in by December 29th, 2020.
2. Complete a total of 5 pages of my final product by January 2nd, 2021.
3. Finalize all changes made from my original plan by January 2nd, 2021.

I was able to successfully complete all of my assigned tasks on time. In addition to the assigned
tasks listed above, I have also done research on the benefits of online tutoring. I gathered
significant research that will assist me in drafting my proposal for my final product. Evidence of
the websites I visited and the research I collected are posted below.

I have also made significant changes to my final proposal. I have divided my paper up into eight
categories. I plan on writing approximately three paragraphs for each of the sections. The eight
categories I plan to write about are:
1. Introduction
2. Why Tutoring is needed
3. Combating Students’ negative perception of school
4. Tutoring during a pandemic
5. Online Safety
6. All-inclusive online tutoring service
7. Benefits of Online Tutoring
8. Conclusion

What I need to move forward with my Capstone (time, space, materials, contacts):
What I need to move forward with my Capstone project is similar to what I have needed in my
past journal entries. My final product will be a comprehensive and complete professional
proposal that explains how and why an online tutoring service is needed at John Oliver
Secondary. Therefore, most of my tasks are related to research, writing and collaborating with
others. As a result, the materials, time and contacts that I need are going to be similar.
One new contact that I will be collaborating with is Ms. Eng, the teacher sponsor of the Math
and Science tutor Club offered at John Oliver. I will be scheduling a meeting with Ms. Eng next
week.

Time: 8 hours
Contacts: Ms. Ink, Mr. Edge and Ms. Eng

Obstacles I have encountered and how I have moved forward:

An obstacle that I encountered was making an outline for my final product. I was not sure what a
professional proposal is expected to include. I researched online, but could only find business
proposals. I tried to follow an outline that was similar to those that were posted online, but I
quickly realized that by doing so, I was not able to include everything that I wanted to.
Therefore, I wrote down all of the facts that I wanted to include in my proposal and grouped
similar details together. I then came up with a theme that encompassed the underlying subject
of each detail.

Obstacles I can foresee in my next steps:

The obstacles that I can foresee in my next steps are similar to the obstacles that I experienced
last week. Communication has always been a challenge of mine, therefore, I expect to
experience many difficulties in expressing my thoughts and opinions in my next steps. I am also
going to have to summarize many research statistics and articles.

Another challenge that I can foresee is scheduling a meeting with Ms. Eng, the teacher sponsor
of the Math and Science tutor club. I have collaborated with three teachers in the school so far.
Scheduling meetings with each of the teachers I worked with was a struggle as they were very
busy.

The skills I have used and what I have learned:

The skills that I have used this week are adaptability, time management and communication
skills. I have used adaptability to make changes to my overall project to better suit the student
body. After considering Ms. Ink’s comments and my personal research, I came to the conclusion
that there are many details regarding my project that do not align with my final goal. Therefore, I
have had to use both critical and creative skills to adjust my project so that it completely aligns
with my final goal. I also used time management skills to plan my work schedule over the winter
break. Balancing personal time with work is a challenging task that many have difficulty with. I
was able to use skills related to time management to make a detailed schedule for myself. I also
used communication skills this week. Because my final product is a comprehensive written
report, my communication skills are constantly being tested as I have to express my thoughts
and opinions on my proposal. In addition, I had to summarize many articles and statistics to
include in my final product, which has also tested my communication skills.

The skill that I have learned this week is reflection. I took the time to completely understand my
goals for this project and how my tasks and actions have aligned with them. I think reflection is
an important skill for everyone to exercise because it unveils the main purpose and significance
behind one’s efforts. CLC is a course that is designed to help students explore their interests
and pursue their passions. Therefore, I took advantage of the extra time that was given to me
during winter break and made proper connections between my passion and the work that I am
currently doing for my project.

My goals and deadlines for the next week:

1. Meet with the teacher sponsor of the Math and Science Tutor Club by January 8th, 2021
a. Discuss the project plan
b. Discuss proposal
2. Complete a total of 7 pages for the final proposal by January 10th, 2021
a. Include title page
b. Contents page
c. 5 pages dedicated to information
