The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) legalised by Government of India in
1971 with some strict conditions to avoid its misuse. MTP Amendment Act, 2017
was enacted by the government of India with the intension of reducing the
incidence of illegal abortion and consequent maternal mortality and morbidity.
According to this act, a pregnancy may be terminated on certain grounds with in
the first 12 weeks of pregnancy on the opinion of one registered medical
practitioner. If the pregnancy has lasted more than 12 weeks, but fewer than 24
weeks, two registered medical practitioners must be of the opinion, formed in
good faith, that the required ground exist. The grounds for such termination of
pregnancies are:
(a) The continuation of the pregnancy would involve a risk to the life of the
pregnant woman or of grave injury physical or mental health; or
(b) There is a substantial risk that of the child were born, it would suffer from
such physical or mental abnormalities as to be seriously handicapped.
(i) Following statements are given regarding MTP:
(p) MTPs are generally advised during first trimester.
(q) MTPs are used as a contraceptive method.
(r) MTPs are always surgical.
(s) MTPs are require the assistance of qualified medical personnel.

(ii) After how much period MTP is advicable?

(a) upto 20 weeks or 140 days or four months
(b) upto 10 weeks or 70 days or three months
(c) upto 30 weeks or 210 days or seven and half months
(d) upto 25 weeks or 175 days or five months
(iii) By MTP Act which two programme will succeed?
(a) Control on population growth, Birth rate
(b) Control on population growth, Death rate
(c) Control of population growth, Mother & Child Healthcare
(d) Family planning, control of population growth

(iv) Read the following given statements and mark the option that are correct
statements.
(p) MTP was legalised in 1971.

(q) inability to conceive or produce children even after 2 years of protected sexual
cohabitation is called fertility.
surgical method of contraception prevents gamete formation.
(r) MTP are relatively safe and performed under medical personnel supervision.
(a) p and q (b) q and r

(c) p and s (d) All of these

(v) If the pregnancy of a women is beyond 12 weeks and upto 20 weeks for MTP:
(a) opinion of one doctor is necessary.
(b) opinions of two doctors are necessary.
(c) opinion of medical board with more than two doctors is necessary.
(d) permission from the local civil court is necessary
16. Read the following and answer any four questions from 16 (i) to 16 (v) given
below:
Plasmodium, a tiny protozoan is responsible for malaria disease. Different species
of Plasmodium (P. vivax, P. malaria, P. falciparum) are responsible for different
types of malaria. If these, malignant malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum is
the most serious one and can even be fatal. Plasmodium enters the human body as
sporozoites (infectious form) through the bite of infected female Anopheles
mosquito. The parasites initially multiply within the liver cells and then attack the
red blood cells (RBCs) resulting in their rupture. The rupture of RBCs is associated
with release of a toxic substance, haemozoin, which is responsible for the chill and
high fever recurring every three to four days. When a female Anopheles mosquito
bites an infected person, these parasites enter the mosquito’s body and undergo
further development. The parasites multiply within them to form sporozoites that
are stored in their salivary glands. When these mosquitoes bite a human, the
sporozoites are introduced into his/ her body, thereby initiating the events
mentioned above. It is interesting to note that the malarial parasite requires two
hosts – human and mosquitoes – to complete its life cycle. The female Anopheles
mosquito is the vector (transmitting agent) too.

(i) The sexual cycle of Plasmodium is completed in:

(a) the gut of mosquito (b) RBCs
(c) liver tissue
(d) the salivary gland of the mosquito
(ii) Malaria parasite is best obtained from a patient:
(a) an hour after rise of temperature.
(b) while temperature is rising sharply.
(c) after 24 hours when temperature is normal.
(d) after temperature becomes normal.
(iii) Who is the primary host of malarial parasite?
(a) Man (b) Rat
(c) Anopheles (d) None of these

(iv) Malignant tertian malaria is caused by:

(a) Plasmodium vivax
(b) Plasmodium ovale
(c) Plasmodium malariae
(d) Plasmodium falciparum
(v) Assertion: Plasmodium causes disease in female
Anopheles mosquitoes.
Reason: Female Anopheles mosquitoes feed on human blood.
(a) Both are correct statements and reason is correct explanation for assertion
(b) Both are correct statements but reason is not correct explanation for assertion
(c) Assertion is correct statement but reason is wrong statement
(d) Assertion is wrong statement but reason is correct statement
