14 Assertion: (A) Hybrid are generally superior than their parents
Reason: (R) All the dominant trait are present in the hybrid
15 Assertion: (A) Smoking increases the carbon monoxide content in the blood which has
greater affinity to hemoglobin than oxygen
Reason: (R) Carbon monoxide form a stable bond with the hemoglobin and does not
allows binding of oxygen. It reduces concentration of haem bounded Oxygen and cause
oxygen deficiency in the body

22 Alien species invasions has been a threat to biodiversity. Justify with the help of
suitable example. List any other three causes responsible for such a loss.
23 The ability of the body to fight against disease causing agent is called immunity. It is of

SECTION D
29 Enzyme Taq polymerase is extracted from a eubacterial microorganism Thermus
aquaticus from Yellowstone National Park in Montana, USA and isolated by Chien et
at, (1976). Taq polymerase successfully replaced the DNA polymerase from E coli that
was being used in PCR earlier and this shift revolutionized the PCR.

a) What is a primer and its importance in PCR?

b) Taq polymerase after its discovery replaced E coli DNA polymerase in PCR
technique. Explain giving reasons why was the need felt for the change?
c) Write the importance of PCR as a diagnostic tool? Or what are the source of
nucleotides in PCR.?

OR
Transgenic organism (plant, animal or microbes) are the most valuable gift of
biotechnology as they carry desired genes. Transgenic plants are fulfiling the food
requirement of growing world Population. Biotechnology is concerned with application
of living cell or tissue or their components for the benefit of mankind, thus, in the other
word it is a 'biological technology' (a technology based on application of living
organism). It uses knowledge of microbiology, tissue culture, genetic engineering and
chemical engineering. It is one of the most important discipline of modern molecular
genetics.

a) Name the main technique involved in the production of transgenic plant

c) How is the conventional variety of cotton different from Bt cotton variety?
Or
Why do the toxic insecticidal proteins secreted by Bacillus thuringiensis kill the insect
and not the bacteria itself?
30 Pollution, climate changes, over exploitation by human etc, are responsible for changes
in the ecosystem. Change in an ecosystem is responsible for depletion in biodiversity
which directly or indirectly affect human being and their surroundings. So, it is
important to conserve the biodiversity. There is various method like in-situ
conservation, ex-situ conservation by which we can conserve our biodiversity.

a) How many biodiversity hotspots are identified globally?

c) What do you mean by endemic species and where are they conserved?
Or Name any two summits that are organized to conserve biodiversity.
SECTION E
