Experiment 1
AIM: To analysis and learn about “Pronunciation and Articulation”.
What is articulation?
Articulation is the physical act of clear vocal expression. You articulate
sounds with lips, teeth, tongue, jaw, and palate and use your mouth to vary
those sound in tone, volume, pitch, and quality.

Why articulation (Pronunciation and talking) is important?

Articulation is important to be able to produce sounds, words and sentences which are
clear and can be easily understood and interpreted by others in order to be able to
express basic needs and wants, right through to being able to engage in complex
conversations.

Depending on the extent of difficulties, unclean speech can impact significantly on how
well a child can interact with adults and their peers and can affect the development of
language and social skills. A child who is having difficulties being understood can
become frustrated and angry which lead to behavioural issues. Articulation is also
important in literal skills as reading and spelling out the words.

Why are articulation exercise important?

Good articulation requires trained vocal cords. Voice training and doing vocal warm-ups
will help you:

Articulate. Clear articulation requires such deliberate actions as pausing slightly before
you utter hard consonants, such as “t” or “b”. Enunciation exercises help you
differentiate your vowel sounds and make the beginning and end of each word distinct
and crisp.

Train your mouth. The simplest thing to improve the clarity of your speech is to make
sure your mouth is open wide enough for the sound to come out clearly. It might feel
awkward at first, but exercises will help you train your mouth to open wider when
speaking.
Speak up. Increasing the volume of your speech not only ensures the audience will hear
you but also naturally slows your speech and improves your articulation. Vocal exercises
train your vocal cords to speak louder for longer periods of time.

Inflect your speech. Exercising your vocal cords will help you avoid speaking in a
monotone. Infuse your utterances with the natural rising and falling pitch of sentences:
Up at the end of a question, down at the end of a statement.

Breathe from your diaphragm. Exercises help improve your breathing capacity and
control, provide support for your voice, and enable you to speak more clearly over a
broad vocal range.

What are building blocks necessary to develop articulation?

Attention and concentration: Sustained effort, listening and doing activities without
distraction and being able to hold that effort long enough to get the task done (e.g.
being able to attend to speech and sounds long enough to be able to process the
information).

Hearing: For detection of speech sounds.

Good middle ear functioning most of the time (e.g. a child with on-going ear infections,
‘glue ear’ or colds which block the ears may have fluctuating hearing levels which can
affect speech).

Process speech sounds, identify and hear differences between sounds.

Muscle coordination: The ability to move and coordinate the muscles involved in
producing sounds (e.g. diaphragm, lips, tongue, vocal cords, jaw and palate).

Understanding that sounds convey meaning.

How can I improve my articulation and pronunciation?

⚫ Listen to Yourself Speak.
⚫ Monitor Your Speed.
⚫ Eliminate Filler Words.
⚫ Focus on the Final Sound.
⚫ Study Other Speakers.
⚫ Speak with Confidence.
⚫ Think Before You Speak.
⚫ Address Your Weaknesses.

Conclusion: analysis and learn articulation successfully.

What is extempore?
The definition of extempore is done without any preparation. An example of
something extempore is a speech given without any script of planning.

Extempore allows instructors to obtain and assess authentic speech without

having to schedule face to-face time with each student. Instructors can now

Experiment 3
AIM: To learn dynamics of Group Discussion.

What is Group Discussion?

"Group" is a collection of individuals who have regular contact and frequent interaction
and who work together to achieve a common set of goals. "Discussion" is the process
whereby two or more people exchange information or ideas in a face-to-face situation
to achieve a goal. The goal, or end product, maybe increased knowledge, agreement
leading to action, disagreement leading to competition or resolution or perhaps only a
clearing of the air or a continuation of the status-quo.

"Group Discussion", popularly labelled as GD, is a popular methodology used by an
many organizations (company, institute, business school, etc.) these days to gauge
whether the candidate has certain personality traits such as interpersonal
communication skills, confidence in public speaking, team spirit, leadership abilities,
social behaviour and problem-solving skills. GDs form an important part of the
short-listing process for recruitment or admission in a company or institution.

How is a GD conducted?
In this methodology, there are usually 7-12 participants in a group. The group of
candidates is given a topic or a situation which could be either factual, abstract or case
based, and typically given some time to think and make notes about the same. After
this, the group of candidates is, and then asked to discuss it the topic among themselves for
a specific duration ranging between 10-40 minutes (which may vary from one
organization to another). While the group discusses the pertaining issue at hand, the
Moderators Panelists silently observe each candidate on various pre-determined
parameters. The Panelists assign scores to every candidate based on his/her individual
performance as well as how he performed within the group.

Why is a "GD" conducted?

Over the recent years, Group Discussion became a popular method of assessing a
candidate’s soft skills. The contenders who are shortlisted on basis of written exams
have qualified with their intelligence quotient, i.e., aptitude and knowledge. However,
since the significance of emotional quotient arose, new tools such as GD were devised
to gauge candidates’ social and interpersonal skills. Organizations conduct GDs to find
out whether you possess the critical qualities/skills to contribute effectively to the goal
accomplishment process.

• It helps assess how a participant performs under different situations in a group.
• It helps to judge how one conceptualizes and maneuvers his ideas through the
discussion.
• It helps in analyzing the candidate’s attitude towards fellow members through
one’s communication and interpersonal skills, listening ability, humility and

problem-solving aptitude, creative thinking and knowledge on diverse topics.
