LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM (LP) GAS

Point of Transfer
All liquefied petroleum (LP) gas distribution points must meet the requirements of the
International Fire Code, Chapter 38 and NFPA Standard 58.
Prior to installation, a Fire Department permit must be obtained and a $100.00 fee paid. Plans
for permit approval must include information relating to the following:
1. Minimum distance between containers, important buildings and other properties.
(NFPA 58, Table 6.3.1 Aboveground Containers Only)
Less than 125 gallon: 0 feet
125 - 250 gallon: 10 feet
251 - 500 gallon: 10 feet
501 – 2000 gallon: 25 feet
2001 – 30,000 gallon: 50 feet
2. Minimum distance between point of transfer and exposures.
(NFPA 58, Table 6.5.3)
Buildings with fire-resistive walls: 10 feet
Buildings with other than fire-resistive walls: 25 feet
Property line that can be built upon: 25 feet
Places of public assembly (i.e. playgrounds): 50 feet
Driveways: 5 feet
3. Provide documentation of adequate lighting to illuminate storage containers,
containers being loaded, control valves and other equipment. (NFPA 58, 6.16.6)
4. Provide documentation of protection from sources of ignition, including electrical
equipment (NFPA 58, Table 6.20.2.2).
A. 5 feet or less from connections/disconnections requires Division 1 service.
B. 5 feet to 15 feet from connections/disconnections requires Division 2 service.
5. Describe container markings to be placed on tanks (i.e. LP gas, no smoking, propane,
flammable) (NFPA 58, 5.2.8). NOTE: No advertising is allowed on tanks.
6. Loose or piled combustible materials/weeds shall not be permitted within 10 feet of
any LP-gas container (NFPA 58, 6.4.5.2.)

7. Document location of electric power lines over 600 volts. No part of an aboveground
LP-gas tank shall be located in an area 6 feet horizontally from power lines (NFPA 58,
6.4.5.12)
8. The minimum separation from an LP-gas tank and aboveground tanks containing
flammable or combustible liquids is no less than 20 feet. (NFPA 58, 6.4.5.5)
9. LP-gas containers and systems shall be protected from vehicle damage with
substantial bumpers in accordance with (NFPA 58, 8.4.2.2)
10. An identifiable and accessible remote switch to shut off power to dispensing and/or
transfer equipment is required (NFPA 58, 6.10.10).
11. Documentation is required of proper training of all personnel that operate LP transfer
equipment (NFPA 58, 4.4)
12. Containers shall be filled only after determination that they comply with the design,
fabrication, inspection, marking and re-qualification provisions of NFPA 58.

13. The maximum filling limit of containers shall be in accordance with NFPA 58.
(Note: 1 pound of LP = 4.2 pounds)
14. LP-gas containers must be screened with landscaping as approved by the Blaine
Planning Department.
