FLUID MECHANICS-I
Soln:
Given,
U= 10 m/s
µ= 38 m2/s
r= 0.9 m
θ= 30°
Let us first find the radius (R) of the Rankine circle, this is given
by
µ
R=√
2𝜋𝑈
38
=√
2𝜋×10
=0.7776 m
The polar co-ordinates of the point p are 0.9 m and 30°.
Hence r=0.9 m and θ= 30°.
As the value of r is more than the radius of the rankine circle,
hence point p lies outside the cylinder.
I. Value of stream line function at the point P:
The stream line function for the composite flow at any point is
given by
𝑹𝟐
Ψ=U( r- ) sin𝜽
𝒓
PAGE 1
0.77762
= 10 (0.9 − 0.9
) sin 30°
= 1.140768 m2/s
The radial velocity and tangential velocity at any point in the flow
field are given by
R2
ur = U (1 − ) cosθ
r2
0.77762
= 10 (1 − ) cos 30°
0.92
= 2.1954 m/s
PAGE 2
+ve sign shows the radial velocity is outward.
And
R2
uθ = −U (1 + ) sinθ
r2
0.77762
= 10 (1 − ) sin 30°
0.92
= -8.73248 m/s
-ve sign shows the clockwise direction of tangential velocity.
So the resultant velocity,
V = √ur 2 + uθ 2
= √2.19542 + (−8.73248)2
=9.0042 m/s
