You give Cameron

a second chance

Dear Mr. and Mrs... November 00, 2018

Do you believe in second chances?

Before coming to Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services, my life felt like a winding road of
wrong turn after wrong turn.

Like many boys and girls who come to Vera Lloyd, in the first several years of my life I was
exposed to drug addiction, abuse and neglect at the hands of my parents. With my father in and
out of jail, there was no stability or safety for me.

It felt like there was no hope.

My mom met and dated another man who seemed to be

better for the family, but we were not financially stable
and lived in dangerous neighborhoods.

Three months after moving to a new city, my mom’s

boyfriend passed away from a medical condition.
Once again, we were on our own.

So, my mom met and dated another man who was friendly… too friendly. I suffered sexual abuse
from the age of 9 to 15 at the hands of my mom’s new boyfriend. At age 11, he introduced me to
drugs. My life continued to take wrong turns with continued drug use, skipping school, stealing,
probation, homelessness, and promiscuousness.

I needed help.

After my mom and I both failed a drug test at our court date, the judge ordered me into foster
care. That’s when I came to Vera Lloyd.

All gifts to Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Family Services are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
Vera Lloyd turned my life around.

Things have not been easy for me, but, thanks to the care and attention of the staff at Vera
Lloyd, I am learning what healthy relationships look like. I am finally somewhere safe and
stable enough for me to grow into the person I know I can be.

I have gone from being truant and missing over 90 days of school in one year, to getting on
the honor roll and staying there. I have gone from stealing to survive to succeeding in the
community work program.

I am learning how to build a safer, healthier life for myself. Thank you for your support!

It takes the entire team at Vera Lloyd to break down the walls of fear and distrust with each
youth in our care.

Because of your love and support, boys and girls like Cameron have a second chance. A
chance to break the cycle of pain and instability they have felt their entire lives.

Cameron is motivated and equipped to go to college when she graduates high school next
year. Until then, she wants to continue living at Vera Lloyd and growing in the place she has
come to call home.

We are so incredibly proud of the young lady Cameron is choosing to become. Even more
importantly, though, she is proud of the choices and progress she has made.

That is the Vera Lloyd difference.

Will you help us continue to build brighter futures for boys and girls like Cameron?

Your gift of $250, $100 or $50 will go beyond providing these youth with a loving, stable home.
Your gift provides meals, school supplies, clothes and even counseling to help them heal from
the trauma they have faced. Your gift provides a second chance.

Sincerely,

Donna Mahurin
CEO
