• Keyboard is connected to system unit with the help of ports.
• As soon as a key is pressed signal for that character is generated and passes to
main storage of computer.
Mouse:
• Mouse is an important input device.
• It is a pointing device.
• It is used to select different options.
• It has two or three buttons with a ball at the bottom.
• When mouse is moved on mouse pad, ball at the bottom rotates and an arrow like
pointer moves on the screen.
• Mouse is also used to draw pictures and to edit text.

Question: What do you know about scanner? How scanner text can be
edited?
• Image scanner is a useful input device.
• It converts every bit of scanned material into electrical pulses.
• Software converts the printed documents, pictures or photographs into digital files.
• Optical character recognition (OCR) software translates the scanned document into
text that can be edited.

Question: What is meant by voice recognition? Explain.

• Today’s computers are capable to work as you speak before it.
• You need a microphone and sound card for this purpose.
• Microphone converts the sound into electrical signals.
• These electrical signals are translated by; the sound card into digitized form that
the computer can store and process.
• Translating voice to text is a capability known as voice recognition.
• We can now control the computer by giving just vocal commands such as shut
down or print.

Question: What is a color monitors? Describe some features of different

color monitors.
• Colour monitors can display images in multiple colours.
• Monitors are classified by their image producing technology.
• For example a colour graphic adapter (CGA) displays four colours.
• An extended graphic adapter (EGA) produces images upto 16 colours.
• A video graphic array (VGA) present upto 256 colours
• Now a days LCD flat-panel coloured monitors are becoming popular.
• LDCs are light in weight, consume less power and easily portable.
Question: Explain the difference between Impact printers and Non-Impact
Printers.
Impact Printers:
Impact printers work like typewriters. Impact printers come in three types based on
their speed of printing and number of characters per line. Examples are; Dot matrix
printer, Daisy Wheel printers, Line printers etc.
Non-Impact Printers:
They produce a printed image without striking the paper. Their printing quality and
speed is very good. They are noiseless. Examples are; Ink jet printers, Electrostatic
printers, Electro thermal printers etc.

Question: Explain the working of a dot-matrix printer.
Dot matrix printer uses tiny pins arranged to hit the ribbon and the paper. In dot
matrix printer, each letter is formed with the combination of dots. A dot matrix printer
arranges pins to print dots that form characters and all kinds of images.

A normal dot matrix printer has speeds varying from 50 to 600 characters per
second. The carriage width of a printer also varies ranging from 80 columns to 132
columns. A standard-width printer prints 80 characters per line.

Question: Explain how Ink-jet printer differs from Laser printer.

Inkjet Printer:
Ink jet printer work like dot matrix except that ink jet printers have fine nozzles
instead of tiny pins.
Laser Printer:
Laser printer are fastest non-impact printers. They use laser and electro-photographic
technology and have printing speeds greater than 20,000 lines per minute.

Question: What is a plotter? How it works?
