“Displacement VS. Time Graph”

*For showing the following conditions draw displacement vs. time graph.
(a) V = 0 (b) V = constant (c) V = random

 Displacement vs. time graph according to the condition, is shown bellow:

 Here is the 1st condition: V = 0,

0s  1m

1s  1m

2s  1m

3s  1m

4s  1m

We know,
Change∈displacement
Velocity =
Time taken

d 2−d1 1 m−1m 0 m
V 1= t 2−t 1 =
−1
= =0 ms [d2 = 1m, d1 = 1m / t2 = 1s, t1 = 0s]
1 s−0 s 1 s

d 3 −d 2 1 m−1 m 0m
V 2= t 3 −t2 = 2 s−1 s =
1s
=0 ms−1 [d3 = 1m, d2 = 1m / t3 = 2s, t2 = 1s]

As like,
d 4 −d3 1 m−1m 0m
V 3= t4 −t 3 = 3 s−2 s =
1s
=0 ms−1 [d4 = 1m, d3 = 1m / t4 = 3s, t3 = 2s]

d 5−¿d 1 m−1 m 0 m
V 4 = t −t
4
=
4 s−3 s
=
1 s
=0 ms−1 ¿ [d5 = 1m, d4 = 1m / t5 = 4s, t4 = 3s]
5 4

Therefore, according to the graph and equation V = 0, when displacement is

always same. [Proved]
 Here is the 2nd condition: V = constant,

0s  0m

1s  1m

2s  2m

3s  3m

4s  4m

We know,
Change∈displacement
Velocity =
Time taken

d 2−d1 1 m−0 m 1m
V 1= t 2−t 1 = 1 s−0 s =
1s
=1 ms−1

[d2 = 1m, d1 = 0m / t2 = 1s, t1 = 0s]

d 3 – d 2 2m−1 m 1 m
V 2= t = =
2 s−1 s 1 s
=1 ms−1
3−t 2

[d3 = 2m, d2 = 1m / t3 = 2s, t2 = 1s]

As like,
d 4 −d 3 3 m−2m 1 m
V 3= t
−1
= = =1 ms
4 −t 3 3 s−2 s 1 s

[d4 = 3m, d3 = 2m / t4 = 3s, t3 = 2s]

d 5−d 4 4 m−3 m 1m
 V 4= t
−1
= = =1 ms
5 −t 4 4 s−3 s 1 s

[d5 = 4m, d4 = 3m / t5 = 4s, t4 = 3s]

Therefore, V = constant when displacement and time increase in a same number.

[Proved]
 Here is the 3rd condition: V = random,

0s  0m

1s  1m

2s  2m

3s  2m

4s  2m

5s  1m

6s  0m

We know,
Change∈displacement
Velocity=
Time taken

d 2−d1 1 m−0 m 1m
V 1= t 2−t 1 = 1 s−0 s
−1
= =1 ms
1s

[d2 = 1m, d1 = 0m / t2 = 1s, t1 = 0s]

d4 – d3 2 m−2 m 0m
V 3= t 4 −t3 = 3 s−2 s
−1
= =0 ms
1s

[d4 = 2m, d3 = 2m / t4 = 3s, t3 = 2s]

As like,
d6 – d5 1 m−2m −1 m
 V 5= t 6−t 5 = 5 s−4 s =
1s
=−1 ms−1

[d6 = 1m, d5 = 2m / t6 = 5s, t5 = 4s]

 V1 ≠ V3 ≠ V5

Therefore, velocity will be changed every time, when displacement also

changing randomly.
