Pitman Liverpool LMS Migration Project Brief

Background
Established in 1837, Pitman Training are an independent training provider,
delivering online and paper-based tests for educational organisations. Pitman
training Liverpool runs a range of courses, from medical terminology,
shorthand, excel – through to project management and accounting.

To manage the needs of its student base within the 3-month programme,
Pitman Training Liverpool purchased the COTS (Commercial off the shelf)
project management tool known as Basecamp.

Whilst Basecamp is a good tool for sharing documents and messaging, it is

expensive to maintain and has some limitations. As such, the Pitman senior
stakeholders are exploring the option of migrating to another platform.

Considerations
The following options have been considered for the programme:

1. Stay with Basecamp

Pros:ADVANTAGE
 Good easy communications
 Easy to share documentation
 Unlimited users
Cons:DISADVANTAGE
 Costly for the group (£100 p/m for license)
 Works well as a project management tool but not so much as a LMS
(learning management system)
 Unable to track students’ progression towards a BA job
 Unable to embed videos for further learning
 Unable to provide other online courses via the portal
2. Buy another COTS product
Pros:
 Could rectify issues with current system
 Could be a tool at a cheaper price
Cons:
 A lot more analysis needed
 Might not hit all the requirements needed for our students

3. Develop our own LMS

Pros:
 The company can embed its own requirements
 If we control the development, it would be easier to add features to it at
a later date.
Cons:
 Could result in spiralling development costs
 User stories will need to be written in enough detail for developer to
execute

Proposal
The project sponsors will require the BA’s and PM’s to further explore the
above options and create a business case for the benefit of senior
stakeholders.
