THE CRUEL EMPEROR

Once in an ancient kingdom of Mexico, there lived a cruel emperor. He asks heavy taxes from his

The king loved hunting very much. He ordered that no one would cut wood, or hunt in any forests in
the kingdom. And the king spied on people who would disobey him.
One day, he put on his beggar’s disguise. He went to the forests hoping to find an offender. He
saw a young boy gathering dry small sticks outside the forest.
“ What are those dry sticks? Asked the emperor.
“Firewood to cook our meals, replied Temo.
“Ha! Ha! Ha! What heat would those small sticks give? Why don’t you go the emperor’s forest and
gathered firewood there? Teased the emperor. Temo looked at the beggar. He was sad.
“Our emperor is a very cruel man. He loves making life miserable for his people. I am so sad for
him. He does not know that whoever does evil will be taken by evil. “The young boy took his bundle of
sticks and left.
The emperor was bothered. What does he really get from his cruelty? His people are afraid of
him? He has nobody to talk to. He eats his meals alone. Whenever he goes around his palace, servants

4.4Abstraction Essential Language:

(5mins)
The phrase ‘text type’ is a way of classifying and defining different types of language interaction, both
spoken and written. It refers to the purpose of a text and the way it is written.

Enumeration is a rhetorical device used for listing details, or a process of mentioning words or
phrases step by step. In fact, it is a type of amplification or division in which a subject is further distributed
into components or parts. Writers use enumeration to elucidate a topic, to make it understandable for the
readers. It also helps avoid ambiguity in the minds of the readers.

4.5 Application Group Activity:Direction: Read and understand the paragraph carefully. Then, answer the questions
(5mins) below.
The muscular system includes muscles. The muscle provides a place for the bones to attach
and aide in movement of the body. Muscles are connected to bones by tendons, and use this physical
proximity to move the skeletal system. Muscles contract and expand along the bones they are attached
to, creating a range of motion. The type of muscle most intimately connected with bones is skeletal
muscle (in contrast to smooth muscle which lines organs, and cardiac muscle in the heart). However, the
skin expels sweat when muscles are being used.
Questions:
1. What is the general function of muscular system?
2. Explain how the muscles work with the bones and skin in the body?
3. Cite an evidence in a sentence showing the function of the muscles.

5. Assessment Direction: Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.
(5mins) SHIRO AND THE GOLD

Long ago in Japan, there lived an old couple who had a dog named Shiro. The man and the
woman were poor and they lived a simple life. All they wanted was enough money to buy rice for
themselves and Shiro. But year after year, their savings grew smaller. They worried that soon there
would be no money for rice.
One day, the couple were working hard in their garden. Shiro ran here and there, sniffing the
ground. Suddenly, he started barking loudly while digging a hole.
“Be quite, Shiro,” said the old woman.
But Shiro kept barking and digging, so the old man went to see what the dog had found. So he
poked a stick into the hole and felt it strike something hard. He dug a little further and discovered a small
box. When the old man opened the box, he was amazed to see it was full of gold coins- enough to buy
rice for the rest of the year!
But their greedy neighbour heard of their good fortune and became envious. He followed Shiro,
digging holes wherever the dog sniffed, but found nothing. Finally, the neighbour became very angry and
killed poor Shiro.
The old couple cried when they learned that Shiro was dead. They loved the old dog very much.
Then one night, Shiro’s ghost appeared to them.
“You loved and cared for me”, said Shiro’s ghost, “and now I shall care for you. Tomorrow cut
down the pine tree in the garden. Mix some splinters from the tree into a pot of rice”. Then the ghost
vanished.
The next day, the old man cut down the pine tree and the old woman cooked a pot of rice. She
stirred in the splinters and peered into the pot.
“Look!” she cried, her eyes filled with wonder. “Each grain of rice is turning into a gold coin! We
shall have money to buy rice for the rest of our lives!”
The old couple smiled sadly as they thought of Shiro. Even though he had died, their faithful dog
had not forgotten them.
Answer the following questions:
1.Where did the story happen?
2.Who are the characters in the story?
3. Why did Shiro sniff the ground?
4. How would you describe the couple’s neighbour? Why did the neighbor kill Shiro?
5. Enumerate the moral values you can get from the story.
6. Assignment
