Urban social movements
area, districts and neighborhood.

Pilar Barcelón, Rosa Ferrer, Quentin Rodríguez and Miriam Olmeda

-Definition
•Organizations formed by residents to protest about, or make demands for changes
in, the urban environment and urban services. The term was originally applied
narrowly by Manuel Castells in The city and the grassroots (1981) . Those urban
movements contributed to revolutionary social changes.

•Of all Valencia’s districts, Benimaclet is among the most unique. It has a quiet,
village-like atmosphere, yet is home to quirky nightlife unlike any other part of
town with cheap bars and pubs . It also has a laid-back, international vibe, thanks
to its population of students and others who’ve recently arrived in the city.
-Social movements in Benimaclet.
•In Valencia there is a civic platform in which many other groups of citizen
residence, neighborhood associations, environmental organizations...
For example :
-Revolutionary left - Ciudem Benimaclet.
-Movements for social exclusion and immigration
-' Salvem El Botanic ' - Initiative for the garden
- Assemblea feminista de Benimaclet : Vaga feminista del país Valencia

•During the 1960s there was a drop in population (due to the increasing
quality of life in outer áreas and a comercial crisis)
•From 2000 Ruzafa lost 20% of its population and increasing amounts of
immigrants arrived.
-Causes of gentrification
••Quality of life became a purchasable commodity for the middle to upper
classes.
•According to Harvey and Smith (2002) gentrification has become a urban
strategy across the globe.

Diagnosis of the main problems, proposed solutions and improvements
area, districts and neighborhood.

Marcos Momparler, Jordi Tárrega, Xavier Peris and Rubén López

-Main Problems of this area

•The area of Aiora is a central attraction point for immigrants

•Second area in Valencia with the most robberies
-The area of Ayora is a central attraction point for
immigrants
• The problem revolves around the action of the Town Hall of harboring the immigrants in a nursery:
-This site has not been conditioned to be habitable
•The ignorance of the neighbors of the total project apart from the fact that they learned about it in
the media :
-increased the neighborhood opposition and gave way to the neighborhood revolt
-Second area in Valencia with the most robberies
•Aiora,
• is a focal area within Valencia with a high (Within the highest) levels of criminal
activity involving robbery.
• Aiora, holds an index of robbery that is 40% more likely to happen than the rest of the city.
•We must consider the high cost involved with the dealing of theft and the value of
insured goods that were in the property, to determine the severity.
•The first quarter of the year usually produces more robberies, when compared to the
average of the rest of the year.
-Main solutions
•Solutions
• for the first problems:
-Improve the conditions of the place where they will reside, in this case the nursery.
• This includes improvements in hygiene and specially a social development

-If the president doesn’t comply his function we can replace him before the immigrants arrive
•The main solutions proposed by residents in the second problem:

-Increase the police patrol during the night in our neighbourhood

-Install more alarms and security cameras

area, districts and neighborhood.

Herman Godoy, Elías El-Mahroum and Guillermo Toledo

-The unfinished neighborhood

•A sense of abandonment, caused by the lack or even null public
investment

•Continuous population growth, but no new infrastructure

This caused the creation of “asociacion de vecinos” (neighbors association)

•They demand:
-More schools
-More urban green space
-Better transport and communication
-More social infrastructure for young people

•30,000 habitants, a medium city, with out city infrastructure

-World health organization

Recommendation / goal of 9 square meters of green areas per
inhabitant of the World Health Organization (WHO). <9 m ^ 2>

Study:

Improves relaxation and restoration.

Improved social capital

Improves the functioning of the immune system.

Greater physical activity, better physical form and reduction of obesity.

Reduction of exposure to air pollution.

Reduction of the urban heat island effect.

Improved environmental performance

Optimized exposure to sunlight and improved sleep

-Green areas of municipal management according to
number and surface in m2

-Solutions – More urban green space
• We propose:
•The creation of new green /
ecological infrastructures that offer
the maximum of services to the
neighborhood.
•Where the urban and nature interact
and grow together.

Also…
• Air
• Climate regulator
• Bio-diversity
• Exercise / leisure
• Health
• Generate work
