Introduction:
The field trip to Jahangirnagar university is about to saw and have a real life experience about
how a ETP plant work and what is it look like. Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is essential to
purify the waste water which is come from different types of manufacturing industry like
textile, ternary, dyes and chemical manufacturing industry, pharmaceuticals etc. A major
environmental hazard present in textile industries is the discharge of untreated effluent to the
environment, causing pollution of nearby soil and water. To mitigate the risks from the
discharge of untreated water, an effluent treatment plant is required. This report is about what
is an ETP plant and what it does which is from the ETP plant in Jahangirnagar University.

Description:
1. What is ETP?
Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) is most cost Effective & technically proven system to
remove the unwanted, hazardous chemicals from the wastewater to meets the
statutory pollution control requirements, especially for chemicals, pharmaceuticals,
phosphating and electroplating wastewaters.

2. What is the process of ETP?

a) Preliminary Treatment
i. Bar Screen
ii. Oil & Grease Trap
iii. Equalization Tank

Effluent from the collection tank comes to the Equalization Tank in wastewater treatment. The
main function is to act as buffer. To collect the incoming raw effluent that comes at widely
fluctuating rates and position to the rest of the ETP at steady (Average) flow rate. During the
peak hours ETP comes at high flow rate. The equalization tank stores this effluent and lets it out
during the non-peak time when there is no /little incoming effluent. The inlet pipe of
equalization tank carries filtered effluent from cooling tower. The effluent NPSH lifting pumps
move the effluent to the EC SKID.

b) Physico-Chemical Treatment

i. Flash mixer
ii. Chemical dosing tanks
iii. Flocculation with slow mixing system.
iv. Primary clarifier

Process by bringing together particles to form larger flocs, which settle out more
quickly. Flocculation is aided by gentle mixing which causes the particles to collide.
Methods: Biological and chemical processes are involved in this level. To remove, or
reduce the concentration of organic and inorganic compounds. And the purpose of
a clarifier is to remove solids, produce a cleaner effluent and concentrate solids.
Concentration of solids removed from the wastewater reduces the volume of sludge for
dewatering and/or disposal.

c) Biological Treatment

i. Aeration tank
Aeration in an activated sludge process is based on pumping air into a tank, which
promotes the microbial growth in the wastewater. The microbes feed on the organic
material, forming flocks which can easily settle out.
ii. Bio killing zone
iii. Sludge recycling system
Sludge: Solid part separated from waste water by ETP. To clean industry effluent
andrecycle it for further use. To reduce the usage of fresh/potable water in Industries.
iv. Treated effluent collection tank fitted with air supply system to
meet dissolved oxygen requirement of final treated effluent.
v. Flow measurement on outlet. BOD: Biochemical Oxygen Demand or Biological Oxygen
Demand, is a measurement of the amount of dissolved oxygen (DO) that is used by
aerobic microorganisms when decomposing organic matter in water. BOD can be
measured in real-time with a BOD analyzer to improve wastewater process control and
plant efficiency.

d) Overall flowchart for an ETP process

Consultation:
The Environmental Conservation Act 1995 (ECA) provides that all relevant industrial units will
install Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to treat their waste water to achieve certain standard
before releasing it into receiving environment. DOE is mandated to enforce this provision of
law. And the field trip to Jahangirnagar University is very helpful to understand how a ETP plant
work and the beneficial of it with a perfect ETP plant.
