Capacitive Humidity Sensors

Humirel, now part of Measurement Specialties, offers a wide range of capacitive humidity sensor components, probes and modules, which
are ideal for industrial and commercial applications. Vishay’s capacitive atmospheric humidity sensor consists of a non-conductive foil, which
is covered on both sides with a layer of gold. The dielectric constant of the foil changes as a function of the relative humidity of the ambient
atmosphere and, accordingly, the capacitance value of the sensor is a measure for relative humidity.

LIGHT
Spectral Sensitivity
The human eye can see light with wavelengths from 400 nm to 700 nm. Vishay’s ambient light sensors closely match this range of
sensitivity.

Development Kit
Vishay’s ambient light sensor evaluation kits allow developers to quickly
and easily evaluate the ambient light sensor. The kit includes:
s Sensor board with selected sensor, ADC and I2C interface
s Adapter board converts the I2C to RS-232
s Microsoft® Windows®-based software
s Programmable sampling rate and gain 47
s Displays measured illuminance in Lux, μA, voltage, decimal and
hexadecimal

Linearity
The response of an ambient light sensor should be linear. Vishay’s ambient light sensors are linear from 1 lux to 100 klux. Photodiode
output typically requires amplification, while phototransistor output may not.

Output Variability
Vishay offers phototransistor and photodiode based ambient light sensors. For a given irradiance, phototransistors may show lot-to-lot
variability of the output current caused by variability of the photosensitivity and gain. In most applications, this is not a problem. The
lot-to-lot variability of photodiodes is significantly lower because it is caused only by the variability of the photosensitivity.

Switch or Latch?
The distinction between “switch” and “latch” pertains to the
manner in which the output changes state (ON or OFF) in the
presence of a magnetic field.

A SWITCH is best compared to a momentary contact switch,

where applying a magnetic field to the device will turn it ON
and the absence of the field will turn it OFF. A LATCH on the

MAGNETIC / HALL
other hand, is best compared to a toggle switch, where applying
a magnetic field will turn it ON, but it will stay ON even in the
absence of a magnetic field. To turn the output OFF, an inverse
(opposite) magnetic field must be applied.

What is a motion sensor? Important selection parameters
A motion sensor detects the movement of objects within its Output Type (Analog vs. Digital)

Rotary and 3D
Hall Position Sensors
Melexis Rotary and 3D sensors feature a monolithic sensor IC featuring the Triaxis™ Hall technology. Conventional Hall technology is
only sensitive to the flux density applied orthogonally to the IC surface. The Triaxis™ Hall sensor is also sensitive to the flux density
applied parallel to the IC surface. This is obtained through an Integrated Magneto-Concentrator (IMC) which is deposited on the
CMOS die.

The MLX90316 gives the angular position of a magnetic field parallel to the IC surface, designed for contactless rotary position
POSITION / SPEED

sensors. The MLX90333 is sensitive to “3D” components of the flux density (X, Y and Z). This allows innovative design possibilities
for non-contacting joystick applications (e.g. man-machine interface). The output signal can either be an analog signal, a PWM signal
or a Serial Protocol digital signal and is fully programmable (e.g. offset, gain, clamping levels).

OPB420/920 Series
Finding the Right Angle
has never been easier
Features and Benefits:
s Non-contact switching
s Right Angle Sensor: LED in tower, photosensor in base
s Choice of output configuration
s Optical line can be broken in X,Y or Z axis
s 24” minimum, 26 AWG UL approved wire leads

Applications:
The OPB420/OPB920 series optical switch consists of an infrared emitting Mechanical Package Information
diode (LED) and a phototsensor. The LED is mounted on the tower with the
photosensor mounted on the base of a right angle shaped package (90° angle).
The L-Shape, or right angle package configuration, allows for an opaque object

to block the light beam from a multitude of directions including the X-axis,
Y-axis, and Z-axis. The optical centerline between the emitter and photosensor
is at 45° from the mounting base of the device.

The OPB420AZ utilizes a phototransistor with a current output proportional to

the input drive current of the LED. The OPB420BZ utilizes a phototransistor
with a current base-emitter resistor (RBE) which provides protection from
low level light conditions. The OPB420BZ is ideal for applications that require
an enhanced contrast ratio and immunity to background irradiance, such as
detection of semi-transparent media.

The OPB920 series utilizes a photologic sensor with a logical

output rather than an analog like the OPB420 series. The output
of the photologic switches states as soon as sufficient light is
blocked using an opaque object. Four versions of the output are
available to meet most applications: Totem-Pole, Open-Collector, 81
Inverted Totem-Pole, or inverted Open-Collector. These devices
have an internal hysteresis to ensure the output does not oscillate
during switching conditions.

What is a proximity sensor? Typical applications
Proximity sensors remotely detect the presence of nearby Proximity sensors are often found in bulk-handling
objects (non-contact). Several different proximity sensor machines, liquid or tank level detectors, and printing
technologies exist which are each best suited to work presses, for example. Using capacitive technology, touch
with certain kinds of objects, whether magnetic or not, sensors are used in control panels, man-machine interfaces

objects or the human body, while photoelectric sensors
might be suitable for any opaque object, while inductive
types are better for magnetic or metal targets.

MCP9700/9700A
The MCP9700/01 and MCP9700A/01A families of Linear Active
Thermistor® Integrated Circuits (ICs) are analog temperature
sensors that convert temperature to an analog voltage output.
These sensors compete with a thermistor solution in price and
performance. Unlike resistive sensors (such as thermistors),
Linear Active Thermistor ICs do not require an additional signal
conditioning circuit.

Therefore, the biasing circuit development overhead for

thermistor solutions can be eliminated by implementing these
low-cost devices. The voltage output pin (Vout) can be directly
connected to the ADC input of a microcontroller.

KTY silicon temperature sensors

Combining accuracy, reliability and stability, NXP’s KTY silicon
temperature sensors are the ideal choice for applications from
climate control to engine monitoring.
An extensive selection of operating ranges, packages, resistances and tolerances ensures designers can find the perfect solution for
their temperature monitoring needs.
TEMPERATURE

NXP KTY Technology

The construction of the temperature sensor chips based on the spreading resistance principle:

The chip size is approx. 500 x 500 x 240

μm. The upper plane of the chip is covered
by an SiO2 insulation layer, in which a
metallized hole with a diameter of approx.
20 μm has been cut out. The entire bottom
plane is metallized.

The arrangement provides a conical current

distribution through the crystal, hence
the name ‘spreading resistance’. A major
advantage of this arrangement is that the dependency of the sensor resistance on manufacturing tolerances is significantly reduced.
120 The dominant part of the resistance is determined by the area close to the metallization hole, which makes the setup independent of
the Si crystal dimension tolerances. An n+ region, diffused into the crystal beneath the metallization reduces barrier-layer effects at
the metal-semiconductor junctions. This arrangement is polarity dependent.

A second arrangement consisting of two single sensors connected in series, but with
opposite polarity, has the advantage of providing a resistance that is independent of
current direction.

Typical Applications
Automotive Industrial
s Oil temperature s Overheating protection
s Oil module s Heating control systems
s Diesel injection s Power supply protection
s Transmission
s Engine cooling
s Climate control

TEMPERATURE

KTY characteristics
KTY sensors display a virtually linear temperature
coefficient over their entire temperature range, ensuring
highly accurate measurements.

The resistance over temperature can be calculated with

the type-dependent constants A and B. A linearization
resistor can be easily added where further linearization is
required.

As the temperature coefficient is positive, the sensors

exhibit fail-safe operation when a system overheats.
Furthermore silicon is inherently stable, so KTY sensors
are extremely reliable and have very long operational
lifetimes.

Accurate, reliable temperature measurement

From engine management to climate control, systems rely on accurate and reliable temperature measurement to improve safety,
performance and comfort. And that’s precisely what NXP KTY silicon temperature sensors deliver. Thanks to a number of intrinsic
characteristics, they boast better performance and operational advantages over traditional passive-based techniques using

TEMPERATURE
thermistors.

Product offerings
NXP has one of widest ranges of silicon
temperature sensors on the market, with families
specified according to package, nominal resistance,
tolerance and operating range. The KTY81 and
KTY82 families use a twin-sensor technology
for polarity-independent sensing. Delivered in a
hermetically sealed glass package, the KTY83 and
KTY84 series are designed for use in fluids such
oil or water. The KTY84 range offers operating
temperatures up to 300 ºC so is ideal for use in SOD70 SOT23 SOD68
exhaust and heating systems. KTY sensors are KTY81 KTY82 KTY83/83
supplied in a choice of leaded (glass or plastic and 121
SMD (plastic) packages.
