SAINT-GOBAIN SOLAR
Saint-Gobain plays a key role in the solar power industry, especially in Concentrated
Solar Power (CSP) technologies. The goal of CSP is to produce clean and economically
competitive electricity by concentrating the heat of the sun. Saint-Gobain produces
components, pads, mirrors and receivers for the various types of CSP technologies.

Saint-Gobain Solar incorporates all activities of Saint-Gobain Innovative Materials

relating to solar power plants. From mirrors to thermal storage, we have developed
innovative technologies to harness the sun’s energy.

Significant growth in solar power plants is expected worldwide in the next few years.
While the current installed capacity of solar power plants in the United States is
approximately 420 MW, there are 9 GW of new projects in development ranging in size
from 75 to 550 MW.

In Spain, projects representing more than 2.3 GW are approved and under construction.
While the main technology being employed is parabolic trough, interest is increasing in
other technologies such as Power Tower and Fresnel systems.

MIRRORS BY SAINT-GOBAIN
SOLAR GLASS
SGG MIRALITE SOLAR parabolic mirrors combine superior precision and uniform curvature

with high reflectivity. The mirrors are also tempered, which guarantees greater resistance
Flat mirrors to high wind loads, less breakage and, consequently, increased durability.

The unique composition of SGG MIRALITE SOLAR gives the solar mirror superior corrosion
resistance and UV stability. SGG MIRALITE SOLAR has been tried and tested through
extensive outdoor exposure and accelerated test measures.

FLAT MIRRORS
FLAT MIRRORS
Flat mirrors by Saint-Gobain Solar Glass can be used as movable heliostats to focus the
sun’s rays to the power towers in central receiver power plants. They can be used for the
long, narrow mirrors in a linear Fresnel power plant to focus the sun’s radiation onto one
or more linear receivers.

MANAGING THE POWER OF
THE SUN WITH INNOVATIVE
THERMAL STORAGE MEDIA
Flexible and reliable thermal storage is a crucial component of an efficient solar plant.
Saint-Gobain NorPro leverages its capabilities and knowledge of engineered ceramic HEXPAK™ MEDIA
media for heat storage to provide solutions for critical thermal storage systems in solar
thermal power generation. NorPro® ceramic media are uniquely suited for thermal
storage due to their high heat capacity, thermal conductivity and resistance to corrosion
in a variety of atmospheres and fluids.

Saint-Gobain NorPro provides extensive expertise and experience in engineering high-

performance ceramic shapes and materials to optimize system pressure drop and heat
transfer properties. For example, we design and manufacture products for regenerative
processes, where ceramic media are used to collect, store and release heat in a cyclical
operation. The same unique combination of design capabilities, process industry knowledge AF38™ MEDIA
and the resources of Saint-Gobain allow us to provide tailored, competitive solutions for
large-scale thermal energy storage in concentrated solar power applications.

Saint-Gobain NorPro takes the inherent advantages of ceramics and engineers the most
effective solution for your specific solar technology and operating schedule, providing
optimal thermal transfer and heat management solutions for both fixed and moving
bed applications.
