10 Important Internet Safety Tips

1. Personal Information: Don't give out your last name, home address, school name,
or telephone number. Remember that just because someone asks for your information,
you don't have to tell them anything about yourself! Also, make sure your social media
sites are set to the strictest privacy settings possible, because your personal information
shouldn't be available to everyone.

2. Screen Name: When creating your screen name, do not include personal information
like your last name or date of birth.

3. Passwords: Don't share your passwords with anyone but your parents. Always
logout when leaving public computers.

4. Photos: Don't post photos or videos online without getting your parent's permission.

5. Online Friends: Don't agree to meet an online friend unless you have your parents'
permission. Not everything you read online is true, and not everyone is who they seem
to be!

6. Online Ads: Don't buy anything online without talking to your parents first. Don't get
tricked by ads trying to sell you something or say you've won something in order to gain
access to your personal information.

7. Downloading: Talk to your parents before you open an email attachment or

download software, as attachments can sometimes contain viruses.

8. Bullying: Don't send or respond to mean or insulting messages, and be sure to tell

your parents if you receive one. If something happens online that makes you feel
uncomfortable, talk to a parent or a teacher at school.

9. Social Networking: Many popular sites like Facebook and Twitter have minimum
age requirements to sign-up. These requirements are there to protect you and should
be followed!

10. Research: Talk to your librarian, parents and teachers about safe and accurate
websites for research. If you use online information in a school project, make sure you
cite where you got the information.
