Unit - Immigration Past and Present: Mexican Migrant Farmworkers

**Directions for End-of-theUnit Presentation**

You will work together in groups of four to create a Prezi for this assignment. You will each
need to create a Prezi account if you have not done so previously, but it is free to sign up. Once
you get to the main page for Prezi, you will click on the option that says “Students” to create an
account, or log in if you already have an account. Once you are logged in, there are many
presentation templates to choose from, or you can create your own (I recommend choosing a
template, as it will be much less work). I will include a YouTube video tutorial below for those of
you not familiar with using Prezi. Once the presentation has been created, everyone in the
group can be added to allow editing permission, so that each group member can contribute
remotely to the project. It is each group’s choice as to how to divide the work for this project,
but you must be able to show that you have combined individual research and collaborated to
produce a cohesive finished presentation.

Your Prezi will need to include four main topics. Each main topic slide only needs to contain the
topic name and an appropriate picture and/or video that is relevant to the topic. Each main
topic will need to include three sub-topics:

Topic 1: Education
Subtopic 1: Did children of migrant farm workers have opportunities for education? What were
obstacles to them attending and completing school?
Subtopic 2: What have been your opportunities for access to education? Have you had any
major obstacles in attending school? If so, what were they?
Subtopic 3: How does access to education affect a child’s future success in life?

Topic 2: Immigration
Subtopic 1: How has present day immigration law been affected by the Bracero Program?
Subtopic 2: What is the current legislation for immigration between Mexico and the U.S.?
Subtopic 3: What do you think about the current immigration policies?

Topic 3: Labor
Subtopic 1: What was life like for children of bracero families during the time of “Cajas de
Cartón” and the Bracero Program in terms of work expectations?
Subtopic 2: What is life like for children of migrant farm workers now in present day?
Sutopic 3: What is the hardest job that you have ever had to do? How would you feel to work
10 hours a day, 7 days a week in the hot sun?

Topic 4: Leaders for Social Justice

Suptopic 1: Briefly describe who was César Chávez and his role in farm workers labor rights in
the U.S.
Subtopic 2: Briefly describe who was Dolores Huerta and her role in farm workers labor rights
in the U.S.
Subtopic 3: After studying these two important figures, think about what you could do to
advocate for the rights of migrant farm workers in the U.S. (Examples: could you join an
organization? Volunteer? Take part in community projects and educational presentations? etc).

References: The last slide of your Project should cite all of the references that you used for
your presentation.

Presenting:

Each group will choose one person to turn in the link for their Prezi presentation to the online
submission portal. Groups will then take turns presenting their projects to the rest of the class. I
will bring up the presentation on my computer and share my screen, and each group member
will present the section they completed. There will be a few minutes at the end of each
presentation for question and/or comments.
