ST Micro Connect 2 Introduction

1 Introduction

The ST Micro Connect 2 is a host-target interface for single and multi-core digital video
system-on-chip devices (SoCs), providing fast access to host services. It can be used with
an extensive range of STMicroelectronics’s development and evaluation boards and
enables Windows 2000/XP and Red Hat Linux hosts to connect to a target development
board with debug support.

/
-N
1.1 Features
The ST Micro Connect 2 provides a wealth of features:

/A
● 10- and 100-Mbit Ethernet connection

-N
A high bandwidth connection to host computer, enables a remote target system to be
easily shared among users.
● Local USB 1.1 or 2.0 Type B connection(a)

/A
The USB Type B connection provides full plug-and-play, auto-configure capability.

-N
● VHDCI LVDS connection to target JTAG interface.
Some ST boards have an on-board LVDS connection and can be connected to the
host using the supplied SCSI-V cable. For development boards using a standard TTL
/A
IDC header, a separate LVDS to TTL convertor (the STMC I/O convertor Type A) is
provided to connect between the SCSI-V cable and the target interface. For
-N

development boards with an ARM 20-way connector a Type C convertor is supplied.

Further details are given in Section 2.1.2 on page 4 and Section 2.7 on page 7.
● Connects to target RS232 port for serial data transmission
/A

The RS232 connection enables a terminal emulation program to be run on the host, for
the user to send and receive serial data to and from the target.
-N

● Supports STMicroelectronics’s single and multi-core system-on-chip (SoC) devices

The ST Micro Connect 2 provides system startup, program download, debug and I/O
/A

services. Up to three cores in a multi-core SoC may be debugged concurrently.

● ST Micro Connection Package
-N

The ST Micro Connection Package provides software utilities and firmware, including
TargetPacks for contemporary ST evaluation and reference boards. ST TargetPacks
are toolset independent target descriptions, which are dynamically configurable.
/A

Section 2.2 on page 6 lists the contents of the ST Micro Connection Package.
● Easy network installation with built-in DHCP support
-N

● LCD display with Select and Next menu navigation provides simple configuration:
– status and configuration information display
/A

– user message display

– network configuration
-N

– firmware downgrade
– ST Micro Connect 2 reboot
/A

● Support for Windows 2000/XP and Red Hat Linux hosts

2.7 Ordering information
-N
Both ST Micro Connect 2 products include an SCSI-V cable to connect to development
boards that have an on-board LVDS Type F or Type G debug connector. The two products
/A
are differentiated by the STMC I/O convertor supplied in the package to support other target
debug connectors (TTL IDC 20-way JTAG or an ARM 20-way JTAG), see Table 3. It is
-N

important that you identify which type of debug connector is on your target development
board. For STMicroelectronics development boards this information can be found in the
board datasheet.
/A

Note: Although most development boards populated by ST20, ST40 and ST200 based SoCs use
either an on-board LVDS connection or a TTL IDC 20-way JTAG connector, this is not
-N

always the case. In addition STxP70 cores can be found on development boards using
different debug connector types.
