Chapter 1: Creating Planes For 3D Models

SketchUp Make is a software application that lets us create 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional models. For
example school, house, furniture, building or anything else we might be interested in.

Steps to open SketchUp Make:


When we open SketchUp Make for the first time Welcome to SketchUp screen opens. We need to select a
template to start working.
To select the Template: We click Choose Template button Simple Temple – Feet and Inches Start
using SketchUp button. The SketchUP Make window opens.

Object : Any two - or three – dimensional figure available in SketchUp Make window is called an object.

Select Tool

Select Tool: It is used to select any object in the SketchUp Make software. When we start SketchUp
Make, the Select tool is active by default.

Rectangle Tool

Circle Tool

Rectangle and Circle tools: Rectangle and Circle tools can be used to create planes.
We can select the Rectangle tool by using the R key on the keyboard.
We can select the Circle tool by using the C key on the keyboard.

Plane : A flat surface is called a plane.

Hide option can be used to hide one or more objects in SketchUp Make.
Steps to select and hide the human object: We click the Select tool human object (the object which we
want to hide) Edit menu Hide.

We choose Edit Undide Last / All option

Steps to create a Plane by using Rectangle and Circle Tools : If we want to create a stage layout, we must
first give a base, which is called a plane. We will use Rectangle and Circle Tools to create the base for the
stage layout model.

To create a plane using Rectangle Tool –


1. We select the Rectangle tool from the toolbar.
2. We place the cursor where we want to start drawing the plane.
3. We drag the mouse to create a rectangular plane.

To create a plane using Circle Tool –


1. We select the Circle tool from the toolbar.
2. We place the cursor where we want the centre of the circle to be.
3. We keep the mouse pressed and drag the mouse to create a circular plane. (We will draw four
circles at the four corners of the stage.)

To hide the portions of the circle that are outside the stage, we use the Select tool and Hide option.
We should get a stage layout as shown below:

Steps to save a SketchUp Make file: We click the File menu Save option ( the Save As dialog
box opens) we enter the File name and the desired folder location Save.

The Sketchup files gets saved with .skp extension.
