1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

A. Scope of Specification
This specification covers the requirements for HVAC fans used in HVAC systems
including axial fans, centrifugal fans and power ventilators. Fans shall come
complete with all accessory items as required.
B. System Description
Fans shall be factory fabricated and assembled, and consist of fan blades, motor and
drive assembly, casing and accessories as defined in this specification. Fans shall
meet the commissioning requirements of MQ-SP-H-4701 and this specification.
Control components associated with fans shall be in accordance with MQ-SP-H-
4709.
C. Equipment Noise level Limits
The equipment noise shall meet the criteria set forth in MQ-SP-M-4032 and MQ-SP-
H-4700.

3.0 QUALITY ASSURANCE

The following quality assurance items are in addition to the general quality assurance requirements of
specification MQ-SP-H-4701, and the contract documents.

3.1 Manufacturer's Qualifications

Fans shall be the standard product of an equipment manufacturer regularly engaged in the
production of such units and who issues complete catalog information on such products.

3.2 Certifications

A. Products shall comply with performance requirements and shall be licensed to use the
AMCA Certified Ratings Seal.
B. Fan operating limits shall be classified according to AMCA 99.
C. Sound power level (SPL) ratings shall comply with AMCA 301.

3.3 Testing

A. Fans shall be factory tested according to AMCA 300. Fans shall be labeled with the
AMCA Certified Ratings Seal. The equipment SPL shall not exceed the limits as
specified in Section 1.1 C.
B. Fan performance ratings shall establish flow rate, pressure, power, air density, speed
of rotation, and efficiency by factory tests and ratings in accordance with
AMCA 210.

3.4 Design

A. Units shall be equipped with motors meeting the requirements of MQ-SP-E-6022..


B. Electrical components, devices, and accessories shall be listed and labeled as defined
in NFPA 70, by a testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, and
marked for intended use.
C. Fans that are mounted outdoors or otherwise exposed to the atmosphere shall be
suitable for outside use, this includes fan-casing coatings. Refer to MQ-SP-M-4038
and MQ-SP-M-4039 for any additional painting requirements.
D. The fan motor, the electrical accessories and fan bearings shall be rated at 50° C or
higher ambient temperature as required in MQ-SP-C-2000.

4.0 SUBMITTALS

The contractor providing the equipment, prior to procurement, shall submit for approval the following
product’s information in accordance with submittals’ requirements prescribed in the Contract/Purchase
Order (PO) general conditions. Submittal information shall be SI units.

Attachments of this specification contain equipment schedules. The information listed in those
schedules shall be provided as minimum for review before preliminary acceptance of the equipment.

4.1 Product Data

Product data shall include rated capacities, furnished specialties, and accessories for each type
of product indicated and include the following as a minimum:

A. Manufacturer/Representative names/contact information, equipment model/serial


numbers, shipping/operating weights and date/location of manufacturing. Same data
shall be provided for other major components such as fans and motors if
manufactured by others i.e. original equipment manufacturer (OEM) data.

B. Electrical schematic diagrams shall be provided showing all manufacturer and


customer control devices and interlocking.
C. Certified fan performance curves with system operating conditions indicated
D. Certified fan sound-power ratings as indicated on data sheet. The SPL shall not
exceed the limits as specified in Section 1.1. C.
E. Motor ratings and electrical characteristics, plus motor and electrical accessories.
F. Motor data sheets in accordance with MQ-SP-E-6022 and MQ-DS-E-6022.
G. Material gauges.
H. Dampers, including housings, linkages, and operators.

4.2 Shop Drawings

Shop drawings shall be submitted and include the following for each fan and configuration as
a minimum:
A. Detail equipment assemblies and indicate dimensions, weights, loads, required
clearances, method of field assembly, components, and location and size of each field
connection.
B. Wiring diagrams shall clearly indicate all grounding, power, control and signal
wiring and connections. Wiring diagrams shall differentiate between manufacturer
installed and customer installed wiring.
C. Vibration isolation base details shall show the detail of fabrication, including
anchorages and attachments to structure and to supported equipment. Include
auxiliary motor slides, rails and base weights.
D. Equipment schedules shall include rated capacities; shipping, installed, and operating
weights; furnished specialties; and accessories.

4.3 Installation , Operation and Maintenance Manuals

For each type of fan, the following information shall be submitted as a minimum:
A. Unless otherwise specified, six bound copies of the installation, operation and
maintenance manuals shall be provided. Optionally, electronic copies of the manual
may be provided in a format acceptable to the owner.
B. For each type of fan indicated, installation, operation and maintenance data shall be
submitted and shall include operation, installation and maintenance manuals.
C. Maintenance data shall include maintenance instructions, instructions for lubrication,
motor and drive replacement, and factory-recommended spare parts lists.
D. The spare parts list shall be tabulated and include for every part the OEM’s
model/part number. Cross sectional views shall be provided showing locations of the
spare parts.
E. Maintenance data, product data, shop drawings, schematic and wiring diagrams shall
be included in the operating and maintenance manuals.

4.4 Recommended Spare Parts List

Submit factory recommended spare parts list, for inventory purpose, with price for each part.
List shall be tabulated and include, for every part, the OEM’s model/part number.

5.0 PRODUCT DELIVERY AND HANDLING

5.1 General Requirements

A. Deliver fans including packing of small components in factory fabricated protective


containers.
B. Handle fans carefully to avoid damage to components, enclosures and finish. Do not
install damaged components. Replace and return damaged components to fan
Manufacturer.
C. Store fans in clean, dry place and protect from weather, dirt, construction debris, and
physical damage.
D. Comply with Manufacturer's rigging and installation instructions for unloading fans
and moving them to final locations.

6.0 WARRANTY

6.1 General Requirements

A. The Equipment described by this specification shall be quoted and sold in full
compliance with Owner Terms and Conditions of Purchase.
B. The equipment manufacturer shall guarantee the entire unit to be free from defects in
material, design and/or workmanship for a period of twelve (12) months. The
warranty shall commence from the date the unit was commissioned and accepted by
the OWNER (MARAFIQ) for it’s beneficial use or eighteen (18) months from the
date of receiving the equipment at the owner job-site

7.0 PRODUCTS

7.1 Centrifugal Fans

A. General
1. This Section describes the requirements for centrifugal fans for use with
HVAC systems.
2. Centrifugal fans packaged as part of central station air handling units, fan
coil units, and chemical filters are specified in those specifications and are
not a part of this specification.
3. Smaller units are specified in this specification under the heading of power
ventilators.
4. Centrifugal fans in this section consist of factory fabricated, assembled,
tested and finished belt driven centrifugal fans with housing, wheel, fan
shaft, bearings, motor, drive assembly and support structure.

5. All electrical motors and associated control devices, shall be powered from
one single customer furnished supply (as shown on the equipment data
sheet). Motors shall be provided with individual overcurrent and overload
protective devices and auxiliary control equipment, as applicable.
6. Where provided, and unless a lower rating is specifically allowed elsewhere
in the Marafiq Project Specifications, electrical enclosures located indoors
in air conditioned areas shall be NEMA 3 (IP 44) or greater, electrical
enclosures located indoors in a non-air conditioned areas shall be NEMA 3S
(IP 54) or greater, and electrical enclosures located in outdoor areas shall be
NEMA 4X(IP 65) or greater.
7. All electrical apparatus shall be protected against the harmful effects of
short-circuits and ground faults.
8. Where applicable, two external grounding termination points shall be
provided to facilitate Customer connection of the external grounding system
to the equipment.
9. All electrical components shall be UL or FM listed
B. Centrifugal Fan and Vent Set Housings
1. Housings shall be formed and reinforced steel panels to make curved scroll
housings with shaped cutoff, spun-metal inlet bell, and doors or panels to
allow access to internal parts and components. Flexible bonding strap or
wire shall be provided for doors or panels for suitable grounding link.
2. Panel bracing shall be steel angle or channel iron member supports for
mounting and supporting fan scroll, wheel, motor, and accessories.
3. Fabrication class shall be AMCA 99, Class I, II or III depending on fan
design pressure.
4. Horizontal flanged split housing shall be bolted construction.
5. Tubular centrifugal fans shall be fabricated with a tubular housing from
formed and reinforced steel panels with welded seams and the following:
a. Outlet guide vanes
b. Motor and disconnect switch
c. Spun inlet cone with flange
d. Outlet flange
e. Brackets suitable for horizontal or vertical mounting
C. Fan Wheels
1. Backward inclined fan wheels shall be of steel, aluminum or one piece,
fiberglass reinforced plastic construction with curved inlet flange, back
plate, backward inclined blades welded or riveted to flange and back plate;
or cast iron or cast steel hub riveted to back plate and fastened to shaft with
set screws.

2. Forward curved fan wheels shall be black enameled or galvanized steel


construction with inlet flange, back plate, shallow blades with inlet and tip
curved forward in direction of airflow, mechanically secured to flange and
back plate; cast steel hub swaged to back plate and fastened to shaft with set
screws.
3. Airfoil fan wheels shall be steel construction with smooth curved inlet
flange; heavy back plate; hollow die formed, airfoil shaped blades
continuously welded at tip flange and back plate; cast iron or cast steel hub
riveted to back plate and fastened to shaft with set screws.
D. Shafts
1. Shafts shall be statically and dynamically balanced and selected for
continuous operation at maximum rated fan speed and motor horsepower,
with final alignment and belt adjustment made after installation.
2. Shafts shall be turned, ground, and polished hot rolled steel with keyway
and shipped with a protective coating of lubricating oil.
3. Shafts shall be designed to operate at no more than 70 percent of first
critical speed at top of fan's speed range.
E. Bearings
1. Pre-lubricated and sealed shaft bearings shall be self-aligning, pillow block
type ball bearings with an ISO 281, L10 ball bearing rated life of 100,000
hours.
2. Grease lubricated shaft bearings with self-aligning, pillow block type,
tapered roller bearings and double locking collars and two piece, cast iron
housing shall have an ISO 281, L10 roller bearing rated life of 100,000
hours.
3. Grease lubricated shaft bearings with self-aligning, pillow block type, ball
or roller bearings with adapter mount and two piece, cast iron housing shall
have the following applicable bearing life:
4. Ball bearings shall have an ISO 281, L10 rating life of 100,000 hours.
5. Roller bearings shall have an ISO 281, L10 rating life of 100,000 hours.
F. Belt Drive Centrifugal Fans
1. Service factor based on fan motor shall be 1.2.
2. Fan pulleys shall be cast iron or cast steel with split, tapered bushing;
dynamically balanced at factory.
3. Motor pulleys shall be adjustable pitches for use with motors through 3.7
kW; fixed pitch for use with motors larger than 3.7 kW. Pulleys shall be
selected so pitch adjustment is at the middle of adjustment range at fan
design conditions.
4. Belts shall be oil resistant, non-sparking, and non-static and shall be
matched sets for multiple belt drives.

5. Belt guards shall be fabricated to comply with OSHA and SMACNA


requirements; 2.7 mm thick, 20 mm diamond mesh wire screen welded to
steel angle frame or equivalent, prime coated. Belt guard shall be secured to
fan or fan supports without short circuiting vibration isolation. Provisions
for adjustment of belt tension, lubrication, and use of tachometer with guard
in place shall be provided.
6. Motor mount shall be adjustable for belt tensioning.
G. Option and Accessories, when required by fan application:
1. Scroll access doors shall be shaped to conform to scroll, with quick opening
latches and gaskets. Flexible bonding strap or wire shall be provided for
suitable grounding link.
2. Companion flanges shall be galvanized steel, for duct connections.
3. Variable inlet vanes shall be steel, with blades supported at both ends with
two permanently lubricated bearings. Variable mechanism shall terminate
in single control lever with control shaft for double width fans.
4. Inlet screens shall be galvanized steel welded grid screen.
5. Scroll drain connections shall be steel pipe coupling welded to low point of
fan scroll.
6. Shaft cooler shall be metal disk between bearings and fan wheel, designed to
dissipate heat from shaft.
7. Spark resistant construction, when required, shall be in accordance with
AMCA 99.
8. Shaft seals shall be airtight seals installed around shaft on drive side of
single width fans.
9. Weather cover shall be enameled steel sheet with ventilation slots, bolted to
housing.
H. Motors
1. Units shall be equipped with motors meeting the requirements of MQ-SP-
E-6022.
I. When required by fan application or location, fans shall be coated in accordance with
Section 9.0.

7.2 Power Ventilators

A. General
1. This Section describes the minimum requirements for power ventilators for
indoor or outdoor installation for use with HVAC systems.
2. Ventilators in this section consist of factory fabricated, assembled, tested
and finished belt driven or direct drive ventilators with housing, wheel, fan
shaft, bearings, motor, drive assembly and support structure.

3. Units shall be equipped with motors meeting the requirements of MQ-SP-


E-6022.

B. Utility Set Fans
Utility set fans in this section consists of housing, wheel, fan shaft, bearings, motor,
drive assembly and accessories.
1. Housing shall be fabricated of galvanized steel with side sheets fastened
with a deep lock seam or welded to scroll sheets.
2. Fan wheels shall be single width, single inlet; welded to cast iron or cast
steel hub and spun steel inlet cone, with hub keyed to shaft.
3. Blade materials shall be steel, aluminum or as specified.
4. Blade type shall be backward inclined or forward curved.
5. Spark resistant construction, when required, shall comply with AMCA 99.
6. Fan shaft shall be turned, ground, and polished steel; keyed to wheel hub.
7. Shaft bearings shall be pre-lubricated and sealed, self-aligning, pillow block
type ball bearings with ISO 281, L-50 of 200,000 hours.
8. Belt drives shall be factory mounted, with final alignment and belt
adjustment made after installation.
9. Drive shall be sized for a minimum of 150% of driven horsepower.
10. Motor pulleys shall be adjustable pitch for use with motors through 3.7 kW;
fixed pitch for use with motors larger than 3.7 kW. Pulley shall be selected

so pitch adjustment is at the middle of adjustment range at fan design


conditions.
11. Belts shall be oil resistant, non-sparking, and non-static with matched sets
for multiple belt drives.
12. Belt guards shall be fabricated of steel for motors mounted on outside of fan
cabinet.
13. Options and Accessories, when required by fan application:
a. Access doors shall be gasketed with latch type handles. Flexible
bonding strap or wire shall be provided for suitable grounding link.
b. Inlet screens shall be removable wire mesh.
c. Drain connections shall be threaded coupling drain connection
installed at lowest point of housing.
d. Weather hoods shall be weather resistant with stamped vents over
motor and drive compartment.
e. When required by fan application, location or as specified on the
data sheet, fans shall be coated in accordance with Section 9.0
C. Centrifugal Roof Ventilators
Centrifugal roof ventilators are belt driven or direct drive fans consisting of housing,
wheel, fan shaft, bearings, motor, drive assembly, curb base and accessories.
1. Housing shall be removable, spun aluminum, dome top and outlet baffle,
extruded aluminum, rectangular top or galvanized steel, mushroom domed
top; square, one piece, aluminum base with venturi inlet cone.

7.3 Axial Fans

A. General
1. This Section describes the minimum requirements for axial fans for indoor
or outdoor installation for use with HVAC systems.
2. Axial fans consist of factory fabricated, assembled, tested and finished fans
complete with wheel and housing, factory-mounted motor with belt drive or
direct drive, an inlet cone section, and accessories.
3. Units shall be equipped with motors meeting the requirements of MQ-SP-
E-6022.
4. All electrical motors and associated control devices, shall be powered from
one single customer furnished supply (as shown on the equipment data
sheet). Motors shall be provided with individual overcurrent and overload
protective devices and auxiliary control equipment, as applicable.

8.0 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Fan electric motors and all other electrical and instrumentation equipment in hazardous areas shall be
suitable for installation in the hazardous area specified on the data sheet and shall be of spark resistant
construction per AMCA 99.

9.0 COATINGS

9.1 General

A. Fans used for laboratory fume hood exhaust systems or other applications where the
material being conveyed is of a corrosive nature shall have the surfaces exposed to
the air stream coated with a material resistant to the corrosive material. This includes
toilet or kitchen exhaust fans which are subject to high humidity levels.
B. When required or specified, fans which do not fall into the category defined in 9.1.A
shall be coated with Heresite P-413 pure phenolic thermosetting resinous coating.
Coating thickness shall be 0.051mm DFT. Surface preparation and application of
coating shall be in accordance with coating manufacturer’s written instructions.

10.0 CAPACITY AND UNIT CHARACTERISTICS

10.1 General

A. Provide the applicable information listed in Attachment 1, Attachment 2 or


Attachment 3 for each fan.
B. Outdoor units shall be rated at 50º C, or higher ambient temperature as required in
MQ-SP-C-2000. All mechanical and electrical components (such as bearings, wiring,
etc.) shall be able to operate in under the project environmental conditions.

11.0 PROTECTION OF APPARATUS

A. Equipment and accessories shall be delivered with protective crating and coverings
as recommended by the equipment manufacturer.
B. Equipment and accessories shall be stored to prevent damage and protect them from
weather, dirt, fumes, water and construction debris for a period of 6 months.
C. Equipment and accessories shall be handled in accordance with manufacturers
written rigging and installation instructions for unloading, transporting and setting in
final location.

12.0 TESTING

In addition to testing specified above, all unit electrical devices shall be energized as components to
ensure operation integrity prior to the unit shipment. Replacement of nonfunctioning items shall be
conducted with all reasonable speed and the quality assurance engineer shall certify that all such
changes have in fact been undertaken, prior to shipment.

13.0 IDENTIFICATION AND NUMBERING

Fans shall be tagged with a 40 mm x 125 mm x 1.5 mm 304 stainless steel plate with engraved
identification numbers (Owner’s Equipment Number, Manufacturer Name, Model No., Serial No.,
Electric Data, and P.O. Number.) permanently riveted to the frame in a conspicuous location.
