I. Background of the Study

The topic the researchers have chosen/ decided to research

about on is the Mental Health of students in time of a pandemic;

mental health has been one of the top issues that adolescents are

facing, the researchers wanted to study about a topic that they

have basic knowledge on, a topic that the researchers can relate to.

Mental health is defined by the inclusions of our

emotional, psychological and social well-being. Mental

health affects how we think how we act and how we react to things.

There are a lot of things that affects our mental health including

crowded places, what others say about us and being alone, this

pandemic took away most of our social life because we are

prohibited from going outside to meet with our friends or go out

to have fun, being alone gives us time to think about things and we

may tend to overthink which will affect our mental health.

(Psychiatry Res. 2020) This phenomenon brought anxiety and

fear to all of us around the world; short and long term

psychological and mental health implications were brought to

children and adolescents due to Covid-19 outbreak. There are

many factors that affects mental health with the inclusions of;

educational status and pre-existing mental health. (2020,

October) COVID-19 disrupting mental health services in

most countries, WHO survey according to the new survey of

WHO results shows the devastating impacts of the Covid-19

lockdown to the mental health services and needs an increased

amount in their fund. Fear, isolation and loss of income due to

losing of jobs because of shutting down of companies are

triggering mental health complications during this lockdown;

putting more stress and pressure to ourselves because of

problems. “Good mental health is absolutely fundamental to

overall health and well-being,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom

Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health

Organization.

(2020, October) Coronavirus: How lockdown has

affected mental health, a 19-year old student developed an

eating disorder due to lockdown; he says he looks back on himself

from March (of 2020) and sees a different person; his disorder

started when he received his reports back from his college; he did

not realize until his friends spoke to him and told him that his

actions are very harmful and shows eating disorder that’s when he

went to reach out for help.

According to our survey, out of 27 respondents, 18 of them have

been feeling / having problems with their daily life due to

emotional problems (stress, depression, anxiety) which means

that because we are still in quarantine their daily life have been

affected by their emotional struggles, out of 27, 23 said that this

quarantine gave them more stress, anxiety and pressure which

means only 4 of them said that quarantine did NOT give them

stress and other emotional struggles which concludes that a large

number of high school students are feeling burdened because of

this quarantine, 18 of the 27 respondents said that they haven’t

been sleeping well due to quarantine, 24 out of 27 said that this

pandemic gave them more stress, in conclusion high school

students felt more stress due to this pandemic and that is most

probably the reason why they have not been sleeping well,

overthinking at night; thinking about the outcome of this

pandemic and what it brought us during the past 6 months.

II. Statement of the problem

The researchers are trying to find evidences that will prove that

this Pandemic gave stress, anxiety and other mental and

emotional struggles to high-school students;

 During the past weeks/months, have you had an problems

with your daily life due to any emotional problems, such as

feeling depressed, sad or anxious?

 Do you think this quarantine gave you more stress, anxiety

or pressure?

 Have you been sleeping well during quarantine?

 Are you stressed because of this pandemic?

relationships?

III. Hypothesis

health of the Junior high school and Senior high school students of

Colegio de San Bartolome de Novaliches sets forth the following

null hypothesis: The pandemic has caused panic, stress, and

anxiety for the Junior and Senior high school students alongside

with their families.

IV. Objectives

- The researches will find out if our hypothesis is true; This

pandemic caused nothing but emotional struggles to students.

- Name the factors that proves or affects the emotional or mental

health of students which are being one of their top struggles.

- Justify whether there are benefits of this pandemic or not; pros

and cons of quarantine.

- To prove that not only adults can be stressed due to what is

happening around us but also young adults.

Son, C., Hegde, S., Smith, A., Wang, X., & Sasangohar, F.

(2020). Effects of COVID-19 on College Students' Mental Health

in the United States: Interview Survey Study. Journal of medical

Internet research, 22(9), e21279. https://doi.org/10.2196/21279 ,

Student mental health in higher education has been an increasing

concern. The COVID-19 pandemic situation has brought this

vulnerable population into renewed focus our study aims to

conduct a timely assessment of the effects of the COVID-19

pandemic on the mental health of students. Mental health issues

are the leading impediment to academic success. Mental illness

can affect students’ motivation, concentration, and social

interactions—crucial factors for students to succeed in higher

education. But in our opinion, The significance of our topic is we

will know how students mental health affect by this pandemic, as a

student we are honestly experiencing mental health behaviour that

leads me to anxiety, stress and hard to sleep at night because of

overthinking things about the things for school because honestly

it’s so hard to learn online, it’s hard to adjust using online apps to

do our homework’s and project so this we will know how many

students struggles to their mental health and also if we have a

chance to give this to officials they will help us to lessen the

students to struggles to their mental health.

The significance of this research is that the readers will have better

perspective on students’ mental health; students are often looked

down on because of the things that they lack on including grades,

diet and appearance.

VI. Scope Limitations and

Coronavirus Impacts on Students and Online Learning

 College students continue to grapple with the educational

fallout of the pandemic.

 More and more students report feeling stressed and

anxious due to the coronavirus.

 COVID-19 has deepened the digital divide for students and

forced some into homelessness.

 As students on and off campus navigate the fall term,

colleges unveil their spring 2021 plan.

 Colleges and students were not prepared for prolonged

campus closures. Both face a variety of challenges going

forward.

For students figuring out where to go and how to get there,

campus closures were like an eviction notice. The forced migration

from in-person to online learning has also deepened the digital

divide. The digital divide describes the gap between those who

have access to the internet and technology at home, and those who

do not.

 While over 88% of Americans are internet users, the share

of Americans with computers hovers around 74%,

according to Statistic. Smartphones can get you online, but

they aren't machine enough to allow you to join video

conferences, take online quizzes, and write essay.

 The coronavirus pandemic has spurred the adoption of

distance learning at all education levels. In addition to

thousands of colleges and universities, hundreds of

thousands of K-12 institutions closed nationwide. Now,

schools are rushing to fill gaps in their online learning

infrastructures.

 The COVID-19 pandemic is causing more than 1.6 billion

children and youth to be out of school in 161 countries. This

is close to 80% of the world’s enrolled students. We were

already experiencing a global leaning crisis, as many

students were in school, but were not learning the

fundamental skills needed for life. The World Bank’s

“Learning Poverty” indicator the % of children who cannot

read and understand at age 10 stood at 53% of children in

low and middle income countries before the outbreak

started. This pandemic has the potential to worsen these

outcomes even more if we do not act fast.
