CHE121 (INTRODUCTION TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING)

GREEN PROJECT: 3R’s
WASTEWATER FILTRATION CHALLENGE

PO11, PO8, PO10, CO3, A3

‘Going green’ is an environmentally friendly and ecologically practice/lifestyles that can help
protect the environment and sustain the natural resources for current and future generations.

Learning Outcomes:
 Student should be able to demonstrate activities on entrepreneurship of sustainable product
in chemical related industry.

Project Overview:

Green technology development in many areas of

importance to human well-being allows for
sustainable use of existing natural resources.
These areas include wastewater treatment by
using natural sources. One way a wastewater
can be treated is through filtration process. In
this green challenge, you are required to design
a generic filtration device to treat wastewater.

As a future chemical engineer, you are required to find and propose sustainable ideas/solutions
which are technically feasible and economical

Your task

 Conduct detailed survey/literature on the filtration principle for wastewater treatment,

material availability and sustainability, advantages of the proposed solution, economics
(cost of materials).
 Identify filtration elements or packing materials to be used. It is compulsory to use
materials which are from natural sources.
 Outlined how your filtration system
 Build your water filtration device
 the device should have a clear section running from top to bottom showing your
filtration layer or packing arrangement
 the height (H) of the filtration layer is between15-25 cm maximum and the diameter
(D) of the device must be in the range of 5-8 cm
 The cost for building the water filter should not exceed RM30.

Project Milestone:

This project is to be completed in six (6) weeks. Work in a group of 4 members per group.

Collection & Data

Identification & Selection of recycle Create the model & Analysis Report &
Design material Application (Demostrate the Presentation
water filtration)

Guideline for Report Writing:

 Typed, normal font, margins and spacing. Recommended page is about 3-5 pages include
appendices (sketch/drawing). Maximum no. of pages is 7.
 Report should consist of
o Analyzing an existing situation and identifying for improvement
o Competitiveness with existing product
o Start-up cost and price to sell
o Design description (include but not limited to)
 How it works (include diagrams)
 Results of test run. You can use your own wastewater for these runs
 How it can be implemented in our community
 (Suggest where your filtration device can be used or identify relevant
applications)
o Safety, social impact, environmental issues and solution

(Refer template in Notes of Guidance for Assessment 4-Entrepreneurial Opportunity Plan Report)

Assessment:
 Project assessment will be based on 3R Prototype Presentation (50%),
Entrepreneurial Opportunity Plan Report (30%) and Peer Evaluation (20%). Total
assessment for green project is 30% of your final marks
 3R prototype presentation will be conducted in week 14 and entrepreneurial opportunity
plan report and peer evaluation must be submitted after presentation day.
