READING: I AM A FILIPINO by Carlos P. Romulo

Find inspiration and true love.

I AM A FILIPINO – inheritor of a glorious past, hostage of the uncertain future. As such I must
prove equal to a two-fold task – the task of meeting my responsibility to the past, and the task of
performing my obligation to the future.

I am sprung from a hardy race, child of many generations removed of ancient Malayan pioneers.
Across the centuries, the memory comes rushing back to me; of brown-skinned men putting out to sea
in ships that were as frail as their hearts were stout. Over the sea, I saw them come, borne upon the
billowing wave and the whistling wind, carried upon the mighty swell of hope – hope in the free
abundance of the new land that was to be their home and their children’s forever.

This is the land they sought and found. Every inch of shore that their eyes first set upon, every
hill and mountain that beckoned to them with a green and purple invitation; every mile of rolling
plain that their view encompassed, every river and lake that promised a plentiful living and the
fruitfulness of commerce, is hallowed spot to me

READING: SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT

Great speakers talk right. Bestsellers write effectively. Learn your grammar and be one.

1. Singular subjects take singular verbs; plural subjects take plural verbs. Nouns ending in s are
usually plural; verbs ending in s are usually singular.
Example: God is good all the time. (singular)
My cats have a flu. (plural)
2. The number of a subject is not affected by phrases between the subject and the verb.
Example: The babies in the crib are Chinese.
The baby in the crib is a Chinese.
3. The verb agrees with the subject not with the predicate nominative.
Example: I love my dog a lot.
I love my cats more though.
4. If a sentence asks a question or begins with there or here, locate the subject and make the verb
agree with it.
Example: Who is the guest?
There are three packs of exciting ube cheesecakes on the counter.
Here are some tips for improvement.
1. Doesn’t, isn’t and wasn’t are singular. Don’t, aren’t and weren’t are plural and must be with
plural subjects.
Example: Joy isn’t present today.
Herbs don’t grow in my garden.

PRACTICE
A. Choose the right verb. Encircle your answer.
1. (Doesn’t Don’t ) the rain come heavier this August.
2. You are my knight in shining armour.
3. The ball rolls like chaff in the wind.
4. Filipinos eat five or more meals a day even if it is hot.
5. There goes the nice ice cream vendor.
B. Write the rest of the rules below and their examples. Memorize them.
