Interpreting the Meaning Suggested in Visual Media

Background Information for Learners

Visuals have different forms: advertisements, cartoons, charts and tables, collages, comic
books, diagrams, dioramas, DVDs, graphs, icons, magazines, maps, photos, signages,
slideshows, storyboards, symbols, timelines, videos, and websites. We can interpret the
meaning of visual media by focusing on the visual elements, such as lines, symbols, color,
gaze, framing and social distance.

Learning Competency: Interpreting the meaning suggested in visual media through a focus
on visual elements, for example; line, symbols, colour, gaze, framing and social distance

A MOMENT TO BE TOGETHER IN THE TIME OF PANDEMIC

by: MONETA DIOMER R. CALATI

Corona virus or COVID 19 got its way after an outbreak in Wuhan, China. When
Covid19 was declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO), everybody
expressed panic in various behaviors.

This dreadful disease is not a joke after all. It is an invisible enemy nowhere to be found.

As early as March 16, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte implemented a lockdown in

major cities and provinces in the Philippines in response to the unfolding of the COVID 19.
Panic was very evident and the president’s decision alarmed the whole country to take
precautionary measures seriously. Wearing of face mask, thorough washing of hands, and
social distancing rules are on top of the list.

Amidst this health issue, when everyone is expected to stay at home, still many people
out there do not follow the mandated precautionary measures seriously. Disobedience to
authorities resulted to more disagreements between the implementing authorities like the front
liners and the ordinary citizens.
10
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene Protocols at all times.
This dilemma had caused a lot of changes in the life of every individual. The normal way of
life is hard to perceive at present, but every member of a community can help in this time of
pandemic. In our own simple way, we can contribute in making the new normal life easier and
comfortable for all of us. Staying at home is the best contribution we can do not just for our
own good but for the welfare of our front liners in the field. Following precautionary health
measures and obeying authorities count the most. With our present situation, we can do a lot
by using our time wisely and productively.

Being productive in many ways like using recyclable materials in gardening, helping our
parents do the household chores, learning to cook simple dishes for the family, taking care of
younger siblings and above all praying as one family are just some of the many things that we
can spend with our time at home. Giving time to our family is the greatest gift we can offer
them right now while enjoying each other’s company. Looking at the other side of this crisis,
this pandemic had paved the way to unite families and bring them together once more. Against
all odds we will heal as one.

Make Connections Between Information
Viewed and Personal Experiences

Background Information for Learners

Understanding THEME

The THEME is the central message or idea of a narrative. It tells the reader what
the literary piece is all about. It is expressed through what the characters say, do and think,
and through the actions that take place within the story. The theme is also revealed in how
the plot and setting of the narrative are constructed and presented.

By telling the reader what the story is about, the theme expresses what ideas or
issues are raised within the story. Though a longer narrative, like a novel, might deal with
several themes at once, most narratives contain one theme.

Examples of themes include friendship, family, love, respect for others, helping
one another, world peace, equality, patriotism and nationalism, loyalty, cooperation,
determination to succeed, etc.

Learning Competency: Make Connections between information viewed and personal

experiences. EN6VC-IVd-1.4

Then Jizela picked up a stone, threw it on number one, and began to play. As she
jumped, she pronounced each number in Filipino very carefully. When she was done,
she nudged Jemaica to play.

Jemaica threw her stone on one and began to hop. As she hopped into each square,

Jemaica began to play again, but this time, she said the numbers in Filipino as

Jizela played next, saying the numbers in English. When they had learned to
pronounce the words perfectly, they played a real game. As each hopped from square to
square, Jemaica said the words in Filipino, Jizela said them in English. Jizela won, but
Jemaica did not mind. What she thought was they found a new way to learn words despite
the lockdown they experienced.

The two girls did not forget to observe proper hygiene after playing. They washed
their hands thoroughly with soap and apply alcohol afterwards to keep themselves away
from COVID 19.

Throughout the community quarantine, Jemaica worked very hard to learn more
Filipino words. On the other hand, Jizela, having found that learning English can be
fun, worked even harder.

By a month time, Jemaica and Jizela have learned new words by playing
hopscotch. Their words were sometimes in English and sometimes in Filipino.
