Some important abbreviations for the OC-II lecture

Alkyl groups

CH3 Me (Methyl) or Me or CH3

C2H5 Et (Ethyl)

C3H7 Pr (Propyl) n-Propyl: nPr Isopropyl: iPr

C4H9 Bu (Butyl)

nBu iBu sBu tBu (tert-Butyl)

C5H11 (Pent (Pentyl

/ Am) or Amyl)

nPent / nC5H11 iAm (Isoamyl) tAm / tPent Np (Neopentyl)

c-C6H11 Cy (Cyclohexyl)

n = normal; i = iso; s = sec; t = tert; c = cyclo; short forms are written as: iPr or i-Pr or iPr or iPr ...

Amyl and Pentyl can be used synonymous ; "Amyl" without further details mostly means Isopentyl (= iso-Amyl); "Pentyl"
without further details often means n-Pentyl, "Neopentyl" is the only important name for that group (not: "Neoamyl").
Higher alkyls may be abbreviated (Hex, Hept, Oct, Non, Dec), but use of the sum formula is more clear: n-C6H13, n-C7H15 etc.
