1. A 5000-kVA 230/13.8-kV single-phase power transformer has a per-unit resistance of 1

percent and a per-unit reactance of 5 percent (data taken from the transformer’s
nameplate). The open-circuit test performed on the low-voltage side of the transformer
yielded the following data:
VOC = 13.8 kV IOC =15.1 A POC= 44.9 kW
i. Find the equivalent circuit referred to the low-voltage side of this transformer.[5]
ii. If the voltage on the secondary side is 13.8 kV and the power supplied is 4000
kW at 0.8 PF lagging, find the voltage regulation of the transformer.[4]
iii. Find its efficiency.[3]

2. A two-legged core is shown in the figure. (Assume μr = 1000 and constant.)

The winding on the left leg of the core (N1) has 400 turns, and the winding on the right (N2)
has 300 turns. The coils are wound in the directions shown in the figure. If the dimensions
are as shown, then what flux would be produced by currents i1 = 0.5 A and i2 = 0.75 A?
3. The simple loop is rotating in a uniform magnetic field shown in the figure has the
following characteristics:

B = 0.5T to the right r = 0.1 m

l = 0.5 m ω = 103 rad/s
i. Calculate the voltage e tot( t )induced in this rotating loop.[2]
ii. Suppose that a 5 Ω resistor is connected as a load across the terminals of the loop.
Calculate the current that would flow through the resistor.[2]
iii. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the induced torque on the loop for the
conditions in (ii).[2]
iv. Calculate the instantaneous electric power being generated by the loop for the conditions
in (ii).[2]
v. Calculate the mechanical power being consumed by the loop for the conditions in (ii).
How does this number compare to the amount of electric power being generated by the
loop?[2]

Questions from Test 1

4. A motor is supplying 60 Nm of torque to its load. If the motor’s shaft is turning at 1800 r/min, what is
the mechanical power supplied to the load in watts?[2]
5. A ferromagnetic core with a relative permeability of 1500 is shown in the figure below. The
dimensions are as shown in the diagram, and the depth of the core is 7 cm. The air gaps on the left and
right sides of the core are 0.070 and 0.020 cm, respectively. Because of fringing effects, the effective
area of the air gaps is 5 percent larger than their physical size. If there are 400turns in the coil wrapped
around the center leg of the core and if the current in the coil is 1.0 A, what is the flux in each of the
left, center, and right legs ofthe core? What is the flux density in each air gap?[10]

6. The secondary winding of a transformer has a terminal voltage of vs(t) 282.8 sin (377t )V . The turns
ratio of the transformer is 100:200 (a = 0.50). If the secondary current of the transformer is i s (t)7.07
sin 377t - 36.87A , what is the primary current of this transformer? What are its voltage regulation
and efficiency? [10]
The impedances of this transformer referred to the primary side are:
Req0.20Ω RC300Ω
Xeq0.750Ω XM80Ω

7. The following information is given about the simple rotating loop shown in the figures.
B=1T V B=24 V
l = 0.5 m R = 0.4 Ω
r = 0.125 m ω = 275 rad/s
i. Is this machine operating as a motor or a generator? Explain.[3]
ii. What is the current i flowing into or out of the machine? What is the power
flowing into or out of the machine?[3]
iii. If the speed of the rotor were changed to 300 rad/s, what would happen to the
current flow into or out of the machine?[2]
