Spark plugs
Since the introduction of the WÄRTSILÄ 34SG and 50SG engines, different spark plug
types have been used. As engine output has increased, the spark plugs have also
become more exposed to thermal load, which in some installations has resulted in a
reduced lifetime. Introducing new spark plug types is a part of the continuous
improvement process.
A spark plug with a bridge type ground electrode, marked “WARTSILA PAAF092377”
(see Figure 1), was in 2018 introduced as the standard spark plug on new W34 engines.
The ground and the center electrodes have iridium alloy pads. Two other spark plug
types remain in the offering as well.
The spark plugs can be identified from the markings located on the ceramic insulator,
see Figure 1.

NOTE:
PAAF952307 has replaced PAAF138366, see Figure 1. The geometrical tolerance of the
center electrode co-centricity is tighter in PAAF952307.

Replacement interval
The replacement interval of the spark plug:
· If the engine is started / stopped daily or more often, the exchange interval of the
spark plug is 1 000 running hours
· If the engine is running more or less continuously, the exchange interval of the
spark plug is 2 000 running hours.

Socket for spark plug

A new socket for the spark plug was introduced in 2015. The shape of the corners in the
hexagonal drive is changed to ensure compatibility with all today available spark plugs,
including the spark plug marked “WARTSILA PAAF092377 ”. The magnet on this socket
is of a one-piece, circular type. It is stronger, and the spark plug is better aligned with the
socket centerline, compared to previous sockets.

Figure 2, Set with socket and extension piece. The circular magnet is fitted at the end of
the socket cavity.

Figure 3, The profile of the socket compatible with all currently offered spark plugs.
On 34 and W34 engines, the socket is used together with a 600 mm extension. They are
connected via a standard ½” square drive. Sets with one socket and one extension piece,
as well as single sockets are offered.
