Second Quarter
MIDPOINT FORMULA
I. Overview

Consider two points in the coordinate plane and the line segment determined by the points. It is
sometimes necessary to determine the point that is halfway between the endpoints of the segment.
This point is called the midpoint.

II. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:

1. Find the midpoint between two points.

2. Solve for the other end point of a line given a point of the line and the midpoint.
3. Apply the concept of the midpoint formula in real-life.

III. Discussion of Content

Consider two points in the coordinate plane and the line
segment determined by the points. It is sometimes
necessary to determine the point that is halfway between
the endpoints of the segment. This point is called the
midpoint. If the coordinates of the endpoints are
represented by ( x 1 , y 1 ¿ and ( x 2 , y 2 ¿ then the midpoint of
the segment is given by the following formula.

Midpoint= ( x +2 x , y +2 y )
1 2 1 2

For example:

1. Find the midpoint (C) of the line with endpoints A (-4,8) and B (2,-12).

Consider ( x 1 , y 1 ¿ as A (-4,8) and ( x 2 , y 2 ¿ as B(2,-12), so:

Given:
x 1 = -4 y1 = 8
x2 = 2 y 2 = -12

Solution:

¿ ( x +2 x , y +2 y )
1 2 1 2

8+−12
¿ ( −4+2
2
,
2 )

¿ ( −22 , −42 )
¿ C (−1 ,−2 )

2. A map of a national park is created so that the ranger station is at the origin of a rectangular grid. Two
hikers are located at positions (1, 4) and (-5, -2) with respect to the ranger station, where all units are in
miles. The hikers would like to meet at a point halfway between them, but they are too far apart to
communicate their positions to each other via radio. However, the hikers are both within radio range of
the ranger station. If the ranger station relays each hiker’s position to the other, at what point on the
map should the hikers meet?

Consider ( x 1 , y 1 ¿ as A (1, 4) and ( x 2 , y 2 ¿ as B (-5, -2), so:

Given:
x1 = 1 y1 = 4
x 2 = -5 y 2 = -2

Solution:

¿ ( x +2 x , y +2 y )
1 2 1 2

¿ ( 1±52 , 4+−2
2 )

¿ ( −42 , 22 )
¿ C (−2,1 )

IV. Self-Check Test and Evaluation Activities

Find the midpoint for each line segment using the formula (no graphing needed). Show the formula and all work.

1. G (6, 5) and H (9, 2)

2. I (1, 1) and J (-3, -3)

3. K (1, -1) and L (8, -7)
