intonation!

Dialogue 1
Doni : Where have you been? I’ve been looking for you.
Dian : I went to the library for I had to return the novel, The Old Man and the
Sea. Today is the due date.
Doni : I see. Well, you know what? Today after school, our basketball team will
hold a friendly match with Taruna High School in Perjuangan Sports Center.
How about watching them after school?
Dian : I’m afraid I can’t. You know we will have an English test tomorrow, so I
want to spend the whole evening studying English. I’m far behind the
others in English, so I need to catch up. I don’t want to get a poor grade
tomorrow.
Doni : Well, okay. I understand. Or, maybe you want me to come by your house
after the match and help you study?
Dian : No, thank you. Don’t bother. I can manage myself. I’ve got enough books
that can help me.
Doni : Well, good luck, my friend!

Dialogue 2
Nova : Hi, Rin. I didn’t see you this afternoon in the cafeteria. Where were you?
Ririn : I stayed in the classroom because I didn’t feel quite right. I felt dizzy.
But now, I already feel okay after taking some aspirin that Mrs. Santi gave
me.
Nova : Thank goodness. That means you will be able to join the first day of our
extracurricular activities this afternoon, won’t you?
Ririn : Yes, I will. Anyway, I will join English public speaking for my
extracurricular activity. What about you?
Nova : Since I love music so much, I decided to join the school orchestra.
Ririn : Good choice!
Nova : So, what is your reason, anyway, for joining public speaking?
Ririn : As I need to practice speaking English more often, I decided to join
English public speaking.
Nova : Cool!

Dialogue 3
Anto : The weather was so terrible yesterday; therefore, I couldn’t go to school
for my extracurricular activity.
Sheila : Yeah, true. It was raining heavily, so that I stayed at home all evening.

Activity 5
Read the following text. Find out the cause and its effects. Remember that one
cause can have several effects.

POVERTY
Poverty has serious effects for all of the society but they are felt most profoundly
by children who are raised among it. Not only does poverty have an effect on a
child’s health—low birth weights, mental and physical disabilities from lack of
nutrition in the womb, etc.—but on their ability to thrive independently in the world.

The children of poverty are more likely to miss school and eventually drop out
altogether to start work or due to lack of interest. They also carry much more stress
than their middle-class peers. That stress may be compacted with the inclusion of
other family stresses prevalent in poverty-stricken families. These can include
violence, drug and alcohol abuse, depression, job loss, eviction, the incarceration of
one or more of the guardians, and even witnessing death.

Total homelessness—extreme poverty—often leads to death due to improper

nutrition, lack of immunization or medicine, or complications with addiction.
Homeless women, in particular, are at a high risk of miscarriages and infant mortality
when homelessness keeps them from accessing adequate prenatal care.
