1. Object

This is a general rule to be applied to piping systems calculations with regards to blast
conditions and its effects on piping. The Safety department has prepared a document
called “Explosion Overpressure Technical Note P51” (see ref [1]), where it is possible
to obtain all piping systems that must be verified against blast loadings. The present
text will clarify how the information stated there shall be used for piping calculation
purposes.

2. Design Rules

To calculate the piping for blast case the engineer has to primarily run a modal analysis
in Caesar II to make possible to calculate the natural frequency of the piping line and
its mode shapes.

The value to be taken from reference [1] is the drag pressure – note: there is specific
value depending on the area of piping location. From the sketches attached to ref [1],
take the drag pressure values and its duration in ms (milliseconds). So, with the natural
frequency and the duration of the wave it is possible to obtain the Dynamic
Amplification Factor (DAF). It shall be used to simulate the dynamic effect of the event
on piping for static calculation purposes.

The DAF can be taken from the following chart:

There you can see that for piping lines with natural period around 3,0 Hz –
4,0Hz, with a blast load duration of 100ms, the DAF can be equal to 1,0. For the same
duration and natural period around 4,0 Hz – 5,0Hz, it can be used DAF=1,2.

So, the DAF value can be improved depending on how the piping supports are
distributed along the line.

The force applied to the piping for blast loading simulation on piping calculations
can be obtained by the following equation:

F Blast = ( Pdyn . DAF ). A.C D

where:
FBlast = Force on pipe (N/m)
Pdyn = Drag pressure (N/m2)
DAF = Dynamic Amplification Factor
A = Project area of pipe (m)
CD = Drag Factor, according to DNV it shall be equal to 1,1.

To generate the Modal Dynamic Analysis it shall be used the following configurations
on CAESAR II:
