Introduction: The question I will be researching is the question “ Why isn’t there more help to
help alcoholism?” Alcoholism is something some people struggle with but there isn’t as much
help. Instead it is glorified to drink instead of explaining the dangers there is. I believe this is a
very important topic because it affects the person going through alcohol abuse and the family.
Adding to this it affects the family and themselves but there isn’t as much treatment. Also the
treatment that there is it’s very expensive. So I want to solve cheaper rehab or free treatment.

Summary:

The article I chose is based on if alcoholism is an effective treatment. The people doing
the research are William R Miller, PH.D, Scott T Walters, M.A, and finally Melanie E.
Bennett who has a PH.D, in the department of Psychology. It starts off with the question to
know exactly what they are trying to answer. The author is explaining that the question is
simply a hard question to answer without any research. The authors were explaining the
research they were doing on the question of “ Is alcoholism treatment effective” and so far
the authors are saying that it is hard to know if it is effective because it's hard to declare
success. According to the authors many people have different ideas on what is alcoholism.

The authors mention treatment can be given and can be effective but it also can
not be effective. The example they used was that it can be effective depending on the
therapist's effectiveness and this really matters because the therapists are the ones doing the
treatment. The authors mentioned that they did over 265 studies which some were
controlled studies and others were uncontrolled. What they got from their research was
that one third showed improvement. The articles also mention some of the risk that there is
if you struggle with alcoholism. Overall I think the article is good and it isn’t biased
because they talk a lot about their research and their

Response:
Which viewpoints does this source represent? How does this source fit into debate?
What rhetorical aspects are important to consider? Who is the audience? Is the source
credible to its audience?

The viewpoints that this source represents is mostly statistics about alcoholism and
explaining how effective treatment is. The rhetorical aspects are mostly Ethos and logos and
these are very important because they make the source credible. The audience is people trying to
do research on treatment on alcoholism to figure out if it is effective or not. I personally think
that the source is credible to it’s audience because it has three experts on the research. I agree
that it could be hard to actually figure out how effective treatment is because it is depending on
the therapist and how they show to get clean. What I don’t agree with is the same thing. I agree
and disagree because the treatment could or could not be effective depending also on the person.
“Alcohol Facts and Statistics.” National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, U.S.

Response:

Which viewpoints does this source represent? How does this source fit into debate? What
rhetorical aspects are important to consider? Who is the audience? Is the source credible to its
audience?

The viewpoints that this source represents is statistics of every little detail about alcohol.
For example it describes the people who use alcohol their age and sex. This source fits into
debate because it proves the fact that alcohol has a big factor for those who drink and those
who over do it. The rhetorical aspect that is important to consider are logos; it has a lot of
facts and statistics. I feel like the audience is again those who are doing research on
alcohol or want to know the effects of alcohol. I feel like this source is credible to the
audience.

he mentioned Beer addiction and abuse, wine addiction and abuse, liquor addiction and

you are in the need of rehab. According to Juergens people who use alcohol before they
are 15 years old are 7 times more likely to have alcoholism than adults using alcohol at the

Which viewpoints does this source represent? How does this source fit into
debate? What rhetorical aspects are important to consider? Who is the audience? Is the
source credible to its audience?

The viewpoint Juergens represents is specifically on what alcoholism is. Juergens also
explains how each different alcohol makes you feel and this helps you know what type of
addiction you have. Then he has statistics on ages, sex, gender, and the amount the
average drink. He later goes to explain the effects. This source fits into debate because he
is explaining pros and cons of alcohol for example when he is explaining what alcohol is
he does explain that it can help with anxiety and stress but there are many effects if you
drink often. The rhetorical aspects are logos and ethos because he had credibility who was
Theresa Parisi who is a Certified Addiction professional and he has statistics. His audience
could be anyone wanting to know more about alcoholism and also a person who is
suffering from alcoholism. The source is credible to its audience.

Which viewpoints does this source represent? How does this source fit into debate?
What rhetorical aspects are important to consider? Who is the audience? Is the source
credible to its audience?

Response: The viewpoints this source provides is more information on rehab and the
cost. The rhetorical aspects are ethos credibility because the one who wrote the article
specializes in mental and behavioral health. The audience is for those who want to get help
and are looking for a way to pay for treatment. I say the source is credible to the audience
because it is giving out good information plus more information where to get help.

Watkins, Meredith. “What Are the Problems & Effects of Alcoholism on Families &
Marriages.” American Addiction Centers, 2020,
americanaddictioncenters.org/alcoholism-treatment/family-marital-problems.

Summary:

Watkins in this article talks about the effects drinking has not only on the person but also
their family. Watkins first starts talking about the effect it can have on the marriage.
According to Watkins she states “ Alcohol abuse and alcoholism within a family is a
problem that can destroy a marriage or a drive a wedge between members.” What she is
saying is that Alcohol abuse can destroy your marriage or it can just cause lots of problems
with your spouse. According to Watkins she states that some of the problems alcoholism
can cause with your family are your children start ignoring you, cause many fights, family
budget goes down to support the addiction. Watkins also states that couples who normally
get into physical fights usually happen because of alcohol abuse. Some of the effects
according to Watkins are that family members start to experience symptoms of
inadvertently keeping the addiction going and codependency.

Another thing that Watkins explains is the people with alcohol abuse makes a
person make their drinking a priority. Later in the article Watkins goes to explain that
alcohol abuse can cause financial troubles. According to Watkins she states, “ Alcohol
abuse can lead to serious financial problems, but not only because of the actual money
spent on alcohol. Because your inhibitions are lowered when you drink alcohol, you may
be more likely to impulsively buy things without thinking…” What Watkins is saying is
although lots of your money is being spent on alcohol one of the effects it has that people
intend to buy things you don’t even need even if you don’t have the money it doesn’t
matter to the person at the moment.

According to Watkins there are a lot of problems that can happen in a marriage when one
is struggling with alcohol abuse some of them are stress, jealousy, divorce, infidelity,
domestic violence, financial instability, unplanned pregnancy, and marital conflict.
Watkins also states that it impacts children a lot. One of the impacts it has on children is
they have a greater chance of having emotional troubles also it can cause the child to have
problems with alcohol themselves. According to Watkins she states that “ Alcohol abuse
also disrupts routines, such as mealtimes and bedtimes, which children need for healthy
emotional development.”

Which viewpoints does this source represent? How does this source fit into debate? What
rhetorical aspects are important to consider? Who is the audience? Is the source credible
to its audience?

Response: The viewpoints of this source are simply the effects alcohol can have on a
family, kids, spouses, and other loved ones. This source I don’t really see fit into a debate
because all it is saying is facts about the effects it has and I doubt there are any good things
about alcoholism. The rhetorical aspects it uses are ethos because Meredith Watkins is a
credible source she is a licensed marriage and family therapist and she has ghostwritten
many medical and addictions professionals. Another rhetorical aspect is pathos. I feel like
it is pathos because I find it sad all these problems a person can go through and not just
them but their family. The audience is those who want to know about the effects and are
doing research. The source is credible to its audience because it has a lot of good
information and it has been written by someone who is credible.
