Supreme Court Cases How do they apply to you?

Name the Supreme Court case that would apply if you were in these situations.

1. _______________New Jersey V TLO______________________- The school went into your locker


looking for drugs but instead found a vape. They suspended you for 2 weeks as a result
even though you were not using it at the time.

2. __________________Tinker v Des Moines___________________- Your brother and many others at


school love Donald Trump. You don’t care for Donald Trump’s politics. You decide to
protest by wearing a red armband with “I and R” on it (Impeachment and Removal). Your
teacher kicks you out of class saying that it is disruptive, and your principal suspends you
because you refuse to take it off.

3. ________________Tinker v Des Moines______________________- The school newspaper article that


you worked so hard on was pulled from the final copy because it talked about bullies in
school and how to deal with them. The principal said he didn’t think it was proper.

4. _______________Miranda v Arizona________________________- You were arrested for breaking


and entering. The police did not read you your rights and interrogated you for 5 hours,
never letting you leave the police station or call your parents.

5. ________________Bakke v California_______________________- You applied to college and were not


accepted. Later you learned that the school had a quota system designed for students from
other countries to come to that school.

6. _____________________Texas v Johnson_________________- Friends of yours decided to go to a


rally that was against the World Trade Organization. They took a flag and burned it in
protest. They were all arrested.

7. __________________Gideon v Wainwright____________________- You are very poor. You were


arrested for stealing bread from a store to try to feed your family. It is the third time you
are arrested. You have no money for a lawyer.

8. ___________________Mapp v Ohio___________________- While playing a marathon session of


“Fortnite” the police break in with a piece of paper they say is a warrant, to search for
drugs. They don’t find any drugs, but they do find what they call “bomb-making materials.”
You know it is for a science project you are doing for chemistry. You are arrested.

9. ________________Wisconsin v Yoder______________________ On the morning of the first day of


school the principal asks everyone to stand for the pledge of allegiance. After that he asks
everyone to stand and say the new school prayer. Everyone who refuses is sent to the
office.
10. ___________________Lemon v Kurtzman_________________ After 8 years in Fraser public
schools and living in the Fraser community, your parents decide to send you to a private
religious school. Unfortunately, you do not have transportation. The public schools refuse
to help you because you are going to a religious school.

11. _____________Engel v Vitale________________________ Mr. Haxer refused to teach his biology


class about evolution because he was religious and because other students in the class
were religious. He thought that there was a state law about it.

12. ________________Tinker v Des Moines_____________________ Jake gave a speech about sexually


explicit material in front of the whole student body. He was suspended for two weeks. Jake
complained “What about my free speech”?
