Supremacy Clause Article VI- The Constitution is the law of the land. State laws that violate the
Constitution are struck down. Federal law is supreme to state law.
“Full Faith and Credit” • Each state must recognize the laws of other states.
• Examples- A car registration from one state is recognized by another.
Marriage licenses.

Entititled to Privileges and • A state may not discriminate against a citizen of another state

Example- Citizens can live, pass through, buy and sell, and get married in any
state.

Extradition • Governors are responsible for returning fugitives to the state in which they
committed the crime.
• Interstate Compacts- Congressional approval required.

States Rights v. • States rights favors state and local action in dealing with problems. States
Nationalist Position are closer to their members and should solve their problems. Strict
interpretation of the Constitution.
Nationalist position- favors national action in dealing with problems
Growth of the National • Taxing power
Government Ex.- 16th amendment -income tax
Bureaucracy grows as a result of bigger government. Bureaucracy helps run all
the programs developed using tax dollars.

Grants • National government gives money to states through grants. A specific


purpose is given such as road building, education, or airports
• Mandates- Something the federal government says states must do whether
they give them money or not.
• Example- Americans w/ Disabilities Act
• Built ramps, lowered curbs for access
