Thank you very much for your interest in the Cardiac EP Program at St. Michael’s Hospital within the
University of Toronto. Currently we have the following positions (subject to change) available for the
fellowship program:
a. 1 position to start as soon as possible (likely start date approximately March/April 2021)
b. 1 position to start July/August 2022
c. 1 position to start March/April 2023
d. 1 position to start July/August 2024
We have a two year comprehensive EP Fellowship with the overwhelming majority of our applicants
recently directly out of cardiology training. The main requirement for application is that you must have
finished a training program in Adult Cardiology. We typically do not accept trainees for whom more
than 5 years have passed since general cardiology training.
In order to proceed with your application, we will require the following information from you:
1. Recent CV (curriculum vitae, or resume)
2. Three reference letters from individuals you have worked with or have supervised you within
the past 5 years – these letters need to be sent directly to EP Fellowship Program Coordinator
(see address line below) from the referee and should be dated within the past 6 months.
There are three main areas within the fellowship program – Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device (CIED)
implantation; Electrophysiologic Studies and Catheter Ablation; Inpatient/Outpatient consultation and
care including CIED follow-up. Generally, during the fellowship, you will be rotating between these
three areas. You will also be expected to take part in rounds. Some fellows may be eligible for the Royal
College of Cardiology Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma in Cardiac Electrophysiology and
more information can be found on the Royal College Website.
Academic responsibilities
The fellow will be responsible for the following:
i. Participating in all educational activities, such as journal clubs, rounds, teaching sessions, some
conferences etc.
ii. Participating in research projects: planning, coordinating, implementing one or more projects;
trial data analysis, presenting results at local, national, and/or international meetings, preparing
final peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication. This may include Quality Improvement research
or projects.
Clinical/teaching duties
The fellow will be responsible for the following
i. Being present at hospitals for clinical and research activities.
ii. Fellows rotate on a weekly basis through CIED/EP lab/clinic & ward duties.
iii. Attending at all device and arrhythmia clinics during those weeks assigned to clinic/inpatient
duties. When not occupied with procedures, attendance at clinic is also required.
iv. When assigned to the CIED, attending all device implant procedures, attending to all
preoperative and postoperative care requirements of device procedures.
v. When assigned to the EP lab, attending all EP lab/ablation procedures, attending to all
preoperative and postoperative care requirements of EP lab procedures.
vi. Provide In-Patient Consultations during those weeks assigned to clinic/inpatient duties.
vii. Provide at home on call coverage for EP calls.
Any proposed changes to the fellow’s duties or responsibilities will be discussed with the fellow and
other affected physicians to ensure that the fellow’s input and comment are obtained prior to approval
and implementation.
Once we have received your full applications details, we will let you know whether an interview will be
granted. If you are granted an interview, then we will let you know whether you have been accepted for
the fellowship position about 4-8 months prior to the start date, to complete all necessary paperwork in
a timely fashion.
