Title: THE EFFICACY OF TUBA-TUBA (Jatropha curcas L.) LEAF EXRACT
AS ALTERNATIVE PESTICIDE FOR APHIDS (Aphidoidea) IN MUNGBEAN
(Vigna Radiata L.)

Proposal start and end:

A. PROBLEM

Research topic: THE TESTING OF EFFECTIVENESS OF TUBA-TUBA LEAF

EXTRACT FOR LIQUIDATING THE APHIDS IN THE MUNGBEAN.

B. Hypothesis

Ho1. There are significant differences in the number of Aphids died and the

effectiveness of tuba-tuba leaf extract.

C. Background of the Study

Agricultural industry in the Philippines is the new craze. The tuba-tuba plant

(Jatropha curcas) also known in Tagalog as Tubang Bakod, Physic Nut or Tuba-tuba

and Jatropha interchangeably. It is simple to harvest and it can be cultivated almost

anywhere (normal soil, sandy, gravely or rocky soil) and it adapts to the different

climates easily.
The mung bean (Vigna radiata L.), also known as green gram, is an important

pulse crop providing vegetable protein for people throughout Asia. Mung bean is a

traditional foodstuff in China, is widely cultivated monoculture in dry and semi-dry

areas and used throughout China because of its drought-fixing tolerance and soil

fertilization. The Mung Bean is also used as intercrop throughout China. Because of

its short life cycle, mung beans are also used to cure post-disaster crops where they

are destroyed and re-sowed during mid-growth phase by natural disaster. However,

mung bean production now faces new challenge due to climate change. The discovery

of new genes and the growth of multi-resistance or disease, epidemic, and extreme

climatic tolerance varieties is the best strategy for sustainable crop production.

Because of the wide variety of their species and rapid reproductive cycles, the

Aphids family name Aphidoidae are a common pest in gardeners, commercial farmers

and greenhouses. Slow movement and orange, red, brown, black, and yellow colors

are found in aphides. Their long bodies have two short tubes that are unique to them

are called cornicles. This helps aphids to extract extra sugar from their body in the

form of honeydew. Some of them respond to aphids unfavorably, while others

respond with twisted, curled or swollen leafs and/or stalks. Signs of aphid damage

include lower development, twitching of leaves, yellow of leaves, stunted growth,

browning, wilting, low yields, and death.

D. Research Questions

1. Is there a potential that the tuba-tuba leaf extract can be effective repellent

against Aphids?
2. What is the percentage repellent actions of Aphids in the tuba-tuba leaf

extract?

3. Is there a significant difference between the commercial pesticide and the

tuba-tuba leaf extract?

E. Description in Details of Methods or Procedures

E.1 Procedures

Research Design

The research will apply a quantitative experimental research design, for it aims to

determine the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. It is

conducted with a scientific approach wherein researchers carry out experiments to

discover the facts (Bhat, 2019). Moreover, Shadish (2001) define the experiment as “a

study in which an intervention is deliberately introduced to observe its effect.”

In viewing the fact that this study will make use of Tuba-tuba (Jathropa Curcus L.)

leaf extract to find out its effectiveness as pesticides against Aphids (Aphidoidea) in

Mungbean (Vigna Radiata), and it will be comparing six trials to be able to find their

significant differences, the most appropriate design to utilize will be quantitative

experimental research.

Preparation

The preparation of the extract will be conducted in a controlled environment. The

researcher will ask and consult the assistance of an agriculturist during the

propagation of Mungbean as well as the culture of Aphids.

Data Analysis and Evaluation

The effectiveness of Tuba-tuba leaf extract as an alternative pesticide for Mungbean

will be evaluated based on the number of Aphids killed per trials conducted. To

determine if there are differences between these models “Stastical Package for the

Social Sciences” (SPSS) will be used to analyze, interpret, and explain the data that

will be gathered from the researcher’s experiment.

Ethical Consideration

The researchers will assure to be fair in conducting this experimental research,

following all the necessary procedures in order for this study to undergone ethical

standards.

The necessary procedures for the experiment will be conducted under the supervision

of the research advisers to exemplifies safe working environment.

This experiment will be conducted by the use of the Tuba-tuba leaf extract as an

alternative pesticide against Aphid in Mungbean.

The data analysis will be done with the cooperation of a professional as our

statistician. However, the researchers also have necessary skills and knowledge in

conducting this research study.

E.2 Risk and Safety

The flowering, leavenly and poisonous plant is Jatropha curcas. In all tropical

regions of the world, particularly in India, it is frequently found to develop. In distant

and tribal areas, adverse poisoning because of its fruit and seeds has invariably been

reported among children who do not always know it. Sporadic events are frequently

unreported, misdiagnosed or neglected; typically there are mass calamities.
