AUTOMOTIVE SERVICING NC II
MODULE NO. 1
AUTOMOTIVE SERVICING
EXPLORATORY COURSE
Grades 7 and Grade 8
This Module is an exploratory and introductory course which leads you to Automotive Servicing
National Certificate Level I ( NC I)1. It covers 5 common competencies that a Grade 7/Grade 8 Technology
and Livelihood Education (TLE) student like you ought to possess, namely:
This Module has five Lessons. Each Lesson has the following parts:
• Learning Outcomes
• Performance Standards
• Materials/Resources
• Definition of Terms What Do You Already Know?
• What Do You Need to Know?
• How Much Have You Learned?
• How Do You Apply What You Have Learned?
• How Well Did You Perform?
• References
To get the most from this Module, you need to do the following:
1. Begin by reading and understanding the Learning Outcome/s and Performance Standards. These
willtell you what you should know and be able to do at the end of this Module.
2. Find out what you already know by taking the Pretest then check your answer against the
Answer Key. If you get 99 to 100% of the items correctly, you may proceed to the next Lesson.
This means
that you need not go through the Lesson because you already know what it is about. If you fail
to get 99 to 100% correctly, go through the Lesson again and review especially thoseitems which
youfailed to get.
3. Do the required Learning Activities. They begin with one or more Information Sheets. An
Information Sheet contains important notes or basic information that you need to know.
After reading the Information Sheet, test yourself on how much you have learned by means
of the Self-check.
4. You must be able to apply what you have learned in another activity or in a real life situation.
5. Accomplish the Scoring Rubrics for you to know how well you performed.
Each Lesson also provides you with references and definition of key terms for your guide. They can be of great help.
Use them fully.
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
identify automotive tools;
appreciate the importance of automotive tools.

SHEETS:
1. Wrenches are tools for loosening and tightening of bolts and nuts. It comes in different forms and number in
Metric or in English sizes.
1.1. Allen wrench is used in a type of screw bolt with a hexagonal hole on the head.
1.2.Box end wrench is an enclosed end tool used for moderate application for loosening and tightening bolts and nuts.
1.3.Combination wrench is a tool with an open-end on one side and box-end on the opposite side. It has the same size
on both ends and used in loosening and tightening bolts and nuts.
1.4. Oil filter wrench is a circular-shaped steel with internal tooth and handle. It is inserted to the oil filter body,
tightened as it is turned for removal.
1.5. Open end wrench is a tool with open end used for light application in loosening and tightening bolts and nuts.
1.6. Socket wrench is a tubular-like tool with an enclosed end used for heavy application for loosening and tightening
bolts and nuts.
1.7.Spark plug wrench is a socket-like wrench intended for removing and installing spark plugs.
1.8.Tire wrench is a cross-like or sometimes L-shaped piece of round bar used to remove the wheels of the vehicle.
I. Common wrenches
A.The box wrench completely encircles the nut or bolt to grip all the corners, which allows considerably more
torque to be applied without stripping the nut or bolt. This wrench is particularly useful for loosening tight
bolts and nuts. More time is required to turn loose bolts with the
box wrench.
II.Socket wrenches
A. This wrench is so named because it has a cylindrical socket (in the size of the bolt) that fits down over
the bolt, much like a box-end wrench.
B.The socket wrench is the preferred tool of most technicians when they work with nuts and bolts.
Socket wrenches can be used in places that are inaccessible to common wrenches and are faster at
removing bolts.
C.The socket wrench is the preferred tool of most technicians when they work
with nuts and bolts. Socket wrenches can be used in places that are inaccessible
to common wrenches and are faster at removing bolts.
a. A shallow 12-point socket is used for turning hexagonal
bolt heads in tight places because it offers twice as many starting positions.
f. Impact sockets are designed to withstand the great torque and impact delivered by air impact
tools. An impact socket has thicker construction than a standard socket.
Bars and handles are used to turn the sockets. The drive end is square and available in 1/4-in, 3/8-in, 1/2-in,
and 3/4-in sizes.
NOTE: The 3/4-in size is used for large, heavy-duty bolts
that are found in trucks. The 1/2-in size is used on large automotive bolts. The 3/8-in size is
the most commonly used by technicians. For very small work, the 1/4-in size is used because
of its compactness.
a..The breaker bar is a sturdy handle that is used when great torque is required to loosen bolts and
nuts. The end of the breaker bar can swing to allow clearance.
NOTE: The length of the handle on the breaker bar
provides superior leverage for tight nuts and
bolts.
b. The ratchet is the most commonly used handle for
turning sockets. By rotating back and forth, the ratchet
turns nuts and bolts in areas of limited access
without being removed after each partial turn.
-The ratchet is not intended for use under extreme torque because the teeth on the ratchet mechanism may
strip. -Some ratchets have heads that swivel, which allows.
c. Extension bars aid in reaching recessed bolts and nuts by extending the ratchet drive end. Common
extension lengths include 3 in, 6 in, and12in.Many other lengths are also available.
d.Speed handles and T-handles are occasionally used to speed assembly. One advantage of these
handles is they do not place side stress on the extension and socket. These handles are not used for the
final tightening.
SELF
SELFCHECK:
CHECK:
1. In removing the tire of a vehicle we usually use the tire wrench, what other tool/s can you suggest aside from
tire wrench? Defend your answer. (10 p0ints)
1. Mr. ling is repairing the engine of his vehicle after a long drive. What classifications/types of tools is needed
to do the job? Enumerate at least 2 and explain the use of tools. (10 Points)
II.Draw at least 3 loosening and tightening tools in automotive servicing. No margin needed. refer to the rubrics for your
guidance.
